Everyone's definition for a character actor is different but he's about to get his 2nd Oscar nomination for best leading actor in a title role.

It seems like his awards/nominations for The Master so far have been for Supporting Actor, not lead, which is Joaquin Phoenix. The studio is probably campaigning for them to be considered in those slots so they don't directly compete.

I think PSH is an ex-character actor that transitioned to lead for the most part - like Paul Giamatti and maybe John C. Reilly.
