Saw it tonight at 11:15pm. After a really long day, I grabbed a large Coke at concession to assure I'd stay awake. Needless to say, I didn't need it. I was in awe, by far my favorite movie of the year, and one of my favorites from my favorite director.

I don't know why I had such a relatively flat reaction. I'd say this is Tarantino's second weakest film, with Reservoir Dogs being his weakest.

But hey, if Reservoir Dogs is your weakest film, then you have a pretty incredible filmography.

Saw it tonight with the wife. The last 20-25 minutes did not disappoint. I felt the KKK bushwacking scene focusing on their hoods was hoaky and kind of tacked on. Also, I agree with the above poster about the QT cameo also took me out of the movie. If it was just a brief 2-3 second shot it would have been fine, but it was more, yet the part was not significant or weighty by any measure and should have been given to someone else.

The KKK scene with what's his face should've been deleted completely. It tried to get some laughs, and it did, but it was God awful.

I really didn't care the for the last 15 minutes or so of the movie, but that didn't ruin it for me because the first 2 hours, 25 minutes was awesome.

The lady that edited QT's other films, who died, was greatly missed here.

So there I was, sitting at the theater, at about the fourth trailer, when I remembered I worked 45 minutes earlier because of the holiday  It would have been enough to make me late. I had to walk out and get a refund. Yargh. Will catch it Thursday or Friday.

Really? I thought that scene was hilarious. It was the most I've laughed in the theater since 21 Jump Street.

I thought the KKK scene was great, the whole theater was cracking up.

Yeah, that KKK scene was hilarious. Everyone was rolling in the theater.

The same goes for
Spoiler:
exploding Aussie Tarantino
, that shit was high-larious!

I hope to see the final cut soon. I still stand by my initial reaction to the 3 hour cut that this is the ultra violent Blazing Saddles and ending as Kill Candie.

Agree with the others: the "Night Riders" scene (pre-KKK, which was a post-Civil War creation) was hilarious and the audience I saw it with laughed uproariously. It's clearly satirical and designed to show how ludicrous such a horrific practice was. And it gave Don Johnson a chance to show how funny he can be.

Don Johnson already had me laughing during his introduction and how he wanted Django to be treated while on his plantation. That was also some funny shit.

"Not "black Hercules", "N****les!"

That also got big laughs in the theater.

well, i was mesmerized. fantastic film! loved just about every minute of it. funny (that KKK scene was so random and perfect), shocking, transfixed, bloody good time. probably my 2nd favorite behind IB. i just loved it all. maybe a tad long and could have been trimmed a tad, but that is a very minor gripe.

the dialogue was just amazing. thought the performances were fantastic. Sam L. was the best i've seen him in a long long time. Leo equally as great, Waltz was his usual brilliant self and Foxx was just as good as everyone else. loved the cameos, Tom Savini was a nice surprise and Zoe Bell was a cameo i caught just now upon reflection and knowing she was a "tracker".

definitely a spaghetti Western for our time and thank you QT for making another brilliant film.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but concerning questions about whether or not Schultz was written for Waltz, a recent EW article confirms that it was. In fact, Waltz was the first person to read the script in its entirety. Basically, QT wrote that part expressly for a certain actor, and everything else was up in the air.

Re: Django Unchained (Tarantino, 2012) — The Reviews Thread

Surprised to see myself giving this the lowest score so far (3/5). There was a lot of good stuff in there, to be sure. But it really went downhill for me when
Spoiler:
Waltz's and DiCaprio's characters died. Besides taking two of the best characters and actors out of the movie too soon, it struck me as a monumentally stupid action by a character which 2+ hours of the movie had been building up as smart. For what he knew, Schultz was essentially signing the death warrant of Django, Hildy, and himself. All because he couldn't swallow his pride for a handshake. After that, all the gore and action just felt hollow to me. I didn't feel the surge of emotion that the best revenge movies elicit. It felt like a filmmaker's indulgence. I knew Schultz shaking Candie's hand and walking out would've been a shit ending. But surely the script could've been written in a different way.

I did like the KKK scene ... got huge laughs in the theater. And the acting was top-notch, especially Waltz. I think there's a great movie in there. But as is, to call this one the best movies of the year feels like massive overrating.

^ that scene with the characters happened at like the 2:15 mark. Weren't out for too long.

It sure felt like a lot longer (and it still left more than 30 minutes of movie left). And I'm sure everyone that watches movies knows how it feels ... when the last act of a movie doesn't sit right with you, it hurts the overall opinion disproportionately.

It's a pretty good film. Maybe top 5 of the year for me....but I definitely liked Inglourious Basterds more. First, I thought DiCaprio was excellent, but I still feel the role was better suited for a middle aged actor. Leo still has too much of a baby face to sell the idea that he owns a plantation (even if it was handed down to him). I'll give him credit though, he put on a great performance.

Why did QT have to put himself in the movie? I groaned when he came on screen, and groaned again when he used an Aussie accent.

Waltz also did a great job, but he didn't quite recapture the magic that was Hans Landa.

I thought Samuel L Jackson was phenomenal. Hell I think Steven may be one of his best performances.

I know it sounds like I didn't enjoy the film, but I really did...it just wasn't up to par with his previous effort, which I think is a masterpiece.

Grade: A-

I wasn't too thrilled about it myself but I disagree about RD, IMO Kill Bill is his weakest.
While the movie did not feel long, it could have been trimmed by about 20 minutes.
The highlights for me were the performances by DiCaprio (a personal best IMO), Waltz & Jackson.
I thought that Washington's role was a throwaway and Foxx's too one dimensional (I blame QT for that).
I would have liked more backstory on Jackson's character and his relationship to the Candie family.
Tarantino has what it takes to be a great filmmaker but I am not yet fully impressed.
IMO his best is yet to come but for that to happen he's gotta take it to a more personal level.

I thought this was a perfect film. Every single frame, line of dialogue and scene worked beautifully together.

Sam Jackson was incredible from the moment he first came on the screen about halfway through the film.
