I own this
I don't think there is a U.S. 4k release in the U.S. but Arrow released it across the pond.

The Rule of Jenny Pen AMC+/Shudder
Jonathan Lithgow, Geoffery Rush. Directed by James Ashcroft. 2025
Confined to a secluded rest home and trapped within his stroke-ridden body, a former Judge must stop an elderly psychopath who employs a child's puppet to abuse the home's residents with deadly consequences.
Horror Films as a rule deal with dread circumstances and ghastly subject matter, but I found "The Rule of Jenny Pen" to be genuinely unpleasant. It deals with abuses both mental and physical in a nursing home, and it's filled with spit, and urine, and mashed food, as well as troubled, doddering and infirm older characters. I found it slowly paced and hard to watch. Perhaps it's just my advancing years getting to me, when Horror set in a nursing home is a picture window into my possible future.

Mission Impossible 3...trying to change the formula. not quite there yet, but by next one the formula was nailed to a great degree. for some reason I'm finding many of Cruise's movies are comfort movies that are so easy and pleasurable to watch.

I tend to think of the first "Mission" film as a farewell to the old series, and the second doesn't really feel like a "Mission" film at all to me (and, at the time, I came into it as a big John Woo fan). The third film sets the tone for those that followed. I agree they are very re-watchable. The one thing I absolutely love is the title sequence which echoes the original series opening and theme. Let's hope they continue this for (what I assume is) the last film.

this sucked. it was like all this comic gore. it wasn't even the fun that it wants to be fun. they were acting dead serious. the plot was incomprehensible and/or non-sensical. it was just how far can we push the gore. and, at least, finally, Hardy was intelligible. most movies and Mobland I use subs because I can't understand there dialects so well so I must have them on for this show and I think some of Andor.
It was made for Netflix so they did not care about making a great movie.

HBO Max
Maybe if they got somebody hotter like Connie Britton, Marisa Tomei, or Diane Krueger I would have been aroused though maybe they could not reach Nicole's level of performance.

Mission Impossible: Fallout Paramount 4K
Tom Cruise. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie. 2018
Ethan Hunt and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong.
I figured I'd watch "Fallout" and (later) "Dead Reckoning" leading into the new film. Excellent installment. "Fallout" has a really good script that has lots of twists and turns and yet makes sense, -or at least "Spy Thriller" sense. The cast is terrific, and I particularly like Henry Cavill in a villain role. You know, the movie does an incredible amount of fan service, yet it doesn't get in the way; some other franchises could learn from that.

Black Widow Disney + Imax Enhanced 4K
Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh. Directed by Cate Shortland. 2021
Natasha Romanoff confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.
I thought it might be a good idea to watch "Black Widow" before heading into "Thunderbolts*" this weekend. "Black Widow" had a few false starts before it was finally able to open in theaters back in July 2021, also opening day-and-date on Disney+ (though there may have been an additional fee). It's more of a "Spy Thriller" linked to the MCU than a "Superhero" film. It's good for the most part, but it can't match the high-stakes fun of the "Mission: Impossible" series or the jittery energy of the "Bourne" films. I thought the first half of "Widow" was better than I remembered, but it just kept adding more and more elements and became somewhat ponderous near the end. Scarlett Johansson and the rest of the cast are fine, but it's Florence Pugh who steals the show, and she feels more authentic than anyone else in the cast. The Disney+ stream is very good for the most part, and I like that they've incorporated the IMAX framing for certain sequences.

It was not bad though I am a sucker for a WWII drama.
Helen Mirren and Gillian Anderson were in the cast.

Lily Gladstone was great as usual and Isabel Deroy-Olson could be a rising star. Shea Whigham played her granddad.

Another Simple Favor Amazon Prime
Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively. Directed by Paul Feig. 2025.
Stephanie Smothers and Emily Nelson reunite on the island of Capri, Italy, for Emily's extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman, which is interrupted by murder and betrayal.
I enjoyed "A Simple Favor" for the most part, though I could remember little of the story going into this sequel. Anna Kendrick plays the same jittery character she plays in pretty much everything. I really never had much of an opinion on Blake Lively, until all the behind-the-scenes drama involving "It Ends With Us"; now I wonder if the self-serving viper she plays in the "Favor" films is a studied performance or just a self-portrait. "Another Simple Favor" is essentially a light Who-Done-It with an eye-roller of a Third Act. A genuine waste of time.
