The Lair (2022)

It's an Indie horror movie that was a Shudder acquisition. It's directed by Neil Marshall, the director of The Descent, Doomsday and Hellboy 2019

I actually thought it was pretty entertaining despite being low budget. It's about a British air force pilot who gets stranded on a U.S. military base in Afghanistan and they encounter some genetically modified half alien, half human creatures.

Lots of bloody violence and kills. The creature designs were actually pretty scary looking. Most of the cast is unknown. But Jamie Bamber is in it and he really gives an over the top performance as the U.S. bases major. It's almost a caricature.

Watched the extended version of That Thing You Do! last night. I’ve seen the theatrical version many times and it’s one of my favorite movies so I wanted to show my fiancée as she hadn’t seen it.

The extended was an interesting watch and there were some fun additions/extended sequences but the movie doesn’t flow quite as well. I didn’t realize how much longer it actually is but it adds forty-one minutes so it’s pretty substantial.

The Fabelmans (2022)

Beautiful film filled with wonderful performances.

Glad I got to catch this one in theaters.

HDNET Movies

A movie based on my life

Maybe one of Lou Taylor Pucci's best roles and probably one of the more underrated actors today

it had some laughs here and there

Amazon Prime

Wasted a rare rainy night on this drek

Except for one scene with Yvonnne Strahovski in her underwear it was mostly forgettable

Peacock

A 2015 movie with Nicholas Hoult

It got bad reviews but I liked it

It took a piss on the music business and A&R execs

I don't consider him a villain but a hero for killing James Corden in the movie.

The Italian Job (1969) — I had previously seen this decades ago and with the new Kino Lorber 4K release, decided to give it another try as the first time I wasn't all that entertained. And my opinion pretty much remains the same. The highlight is the car chase scenes in the third act and Michael Caine is great, but the set-up felt really slow and throughout the second act I found myself not very invested. ***/***** (4K Ultra HD)

Prey for the Devil (2022) — Pretty standard and forgettable possession-horror film, a genre I generally don't care for to begin with. There's not much here to distinguish from others from the dark lighting, okay make-up effects and average performances, though Jacqueline Byers was fine. This isn't something I'd ever revisit. **¾/***** (4K Ultra HD)

Black Adam - HBO MAX: This was a fun film, and to echo what a lot of folks have already noted, it was way cool getting the JSA on screen.

I would watch this again.

Holy Spider (2022)

It's clear within the first half of the film's run-time that Director/Writer Ali Abassi isn't trying to make any profound statements regarding the case of Iranian Serial Killer Saeed Hanaei.

When he decides to, the result is very Hollywood, catered heavily to Western audiences.

Even so, the film is both brutal and beautiful, anchored by fantastic performances from Zar Amir Ebrahami & Mehdi Bajestani.

Skinamarink (2023)

A film pushing to do something different shouldn't automatically free it from criticism, such as is the case with Director/Writer Kyle Edward Ball's debut, which seems to be taking the internet by storm.

While I fully appreciate how much dense atmosphere Kyle Edward Ball was able to shove into a film with a $15,000 budget, the film is incredibly dull and overtly long.

Static objects & ASMR galore!

The Queen of Black Magic (1981)

By its final act, this Indonesian classic wears out its welcome but not before delivering a hilarious amount of gore.

If you've seen Mystics In Bali (1981), you know a bit of what to expect on this roller coaster ride.

The Apology (2022)

Single location Thriller anchored by a metric ton of exposition and a fantastic performance from Anna Gunn.

Quite honestly, while well-made, there are better Cat & Mouse Thrillers out there than this one.

Pledge Night (1990)

While I didn't care for the first half of the film (which follows the trials & tribulations of pledging to a fraternity), I enjoyed the Slasher/Supernatural second half, which sees the killer going absolutely ape-shit on half-witted college students.

Extra nods here for Joey Belladonna's (of Anthrax) small role and Anthrax themselves being featured on the film's soundtrack.

Mad God (2021)

Created over the period of 30-years, Director Phil Tippett's stop-motion film is an absolute marvel in creativity & artistry, even if it sacrifices a coherent plot along the way.

Babylon (2022)

Given the amount of mixed reviews for Director/Writer Damien Chazelle's recent film, I was prepare to hate it.

To my surprise, I didn't hate this film and loved the chaos.

At times it's a love letter to Hollywood and at other times its The Mansions of Madness (1973) & lost scenes from Event Horizon (1997) all wrapped into one.

Black Roses (1988)

Outside of possessed teenagers hitting on their friends' parents, Director John Fasano's film about a Heavy Metal band from Hell is fairly enjoyable and inoffensive.

Caveat (2020)

An Irish Horror film with atmosphere and creepy set-pieces to spare, though its overall plot is more painful than it is engaging.

Jakob's Wife (2021)

Outside of Barbara Crampton's enjoyable performance and random spurts of ridiculous gore, this Vampire film feels incredibly run-of-the-mill.

Even at 98-minutes, it consistently feels like its running for more than double its listed run-time.
