It's weird how some deaths of famous people effect you. Like, I obviously remember 9/11, I remember when bin Laden was killed, but I also remember the days and my experiences when Heath Ledger died and Hoffman died...Like, you remember those exact moments those days and whatnot...

Raylene, Marey Carey, and Chrissy Moran probably the only stars that could get a rise out of you today.

Maybe Randy West and Asia are the only people that came out of the business in a good headspace.

Just like when you see a doc on a great musician you want to go back and revisit their previous work.

A few years back I saw a great documentary on Ron Jeremy. I'm not a porn fan but knew the guy. I found it was a little sad and pathetic to see that outside the porn microcosm these 'superstars' are not necessarily equipped for real life. Same with another doc I saw on a female porn star ("The girl next door" or something like that) over a decade ago. Fame and money but purposeless life and problems with relationships. BUt that's just two of them, maybe they are not all fucked up socially...

Brazil (1985)

In my top 5 (maybe even 3!) all-time favourites. I had to show it to the teens in the Cine-club. Complete disaster! They found it too confusing - they didn't know Kafka nor 1984 yet - and weird and depressing. I can understand but the point of the Ciné-club is also to make them discover other things than their usual viewings which are basically Hollywood blockbusters, So now at least they've seen a Gilliam extravaganza!

Even i feel guilty after I watch a porn movie to relieve tension but imagine what people that work in that industry must feel.

Some women like Jenna Jameson and Stormy Daniels say they have the power when they do those movies but they probably just say that to hide their guilt.

Sad this was based on a true story.

Keener has never been more unlikable in a film.

Amazing how this could have been stopped easily before it ever went that far and nobody had the balls to stop it not even that guy who had a crush on her.

Spenser Confidential

A cookie cookie cutter Marky Mark film but is still actually quite entertaining. There are no originality points.
Definitely worth a look on Netflix. It sets itself up to be a series if this pulls in a decent profit.

1917 (2019) — Very well made war-drama all in a one-shot like format. Performance from George MacKay who I guess if nothing else could follow in the footsteps of Tom Cruise for his all-out running ability. Joking aside, really enjoyed this film which manages to provide enough character development for me to care about his well being and task. Probably my favorite of 2019. ****½/*****

I watched a 2018 Korean suspense-thriller called Door Lock, which I quickly realized was a very loose remake of the ingenious 2011 Spanish film Sleep Tight, which I saw a couple of months ago. The Korean film follows a much more routine "woman in peril" blueprint than its predecessor, but it is also a scarier, tenser film. A solid genre piece. 7.5/10

The Wizard (1989) — Has some heart at times, almost ruined by the blatant and, hate to use this word, cringe-worthy product placement from Hostess to Nintendo to Universal Studios (which makes sense since this was one of their movies). The acting and writing is bad and I'm not quite sure who this movie was made for (there is a joke about a teenage girl accusing a grown man of grabbing her breast) but there are some funny bad moments. **¾/*****

April Fool's Day (1986) — Fun horror movie that is on the predictable side but I still found it pretty entertaining. The ensemble cast was alright with the most well known face, at now, is of course Thomas F. Wilson (Biff). Not sure how high up this is amongst the holiday horror movies, but I liked it. ***¾/*****

Another unremarkable Mark Wahlberg movie

Frozen 2 - Disney+. I thought it was fantastic and it was great of Disney to push up the release date for when this was scheduled to show up on D+.

Knives Out (2019) — Fun little murder-mystery starts off great, kind of loses a little steam in the middle, before rebounding nicely at the end. Fine performances all around, though especially Daniel Craig (reminded me why he was also great in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo even with a starkly different tone). Also makes me remember Rian Johnson is a fine filmmaker (loved Brick). ****/*****

El Camino (the Breaking Bad sequel movie) - really enjoyed this, a nice conclusion to Jesse's story. When Better Call Saul ends after next season, I look forward to doing a rewatch of the whole Breaking Bad/El Camino/Better Call Saul saga.

Just like probably how the events of this week will be stuck in our minds for awhile

Flight of the Navigator - Disney+. It has been a minute since I saw this film (I have a vague memory of having seen it in the theater when released) but wow....it was a fun film to rewatch and made me glad that I finished it off today.

Stargirl - Disney+. I think folks will find this film to be a pleasant surprise. Grace Vanderwaal may be one of those award show winning singers but she really carries her own in this film. It has a handful of negative reviews but ultimately is rated fresh on Rotten Tomatoes (near 70% but a much higher audience review). It is worth a watch especially if you have tweens/young teenage kids in your family.

A real superhero.

The Contractor (2007) — Had its moments ruined by shoddy editing and direction. Wesley Snipes also seemed to at least not phone it in compared with some of his other direct-to-video flicks. All in all, okay way to spend 1.5 hours, and had potential. 2.75/5

Watched it on Cinemax on demand.

We should have listened to Soderbergh in 2011.

Bloodshot

It was the very last showing before all theaters went dark. The movie was entertaining but nothing that can't wait until home release.
I will probably always link the movie to this whole Wuhan situation. One of those where were you when moments.

Madison Iseman the only thing worth seeing in this crap movie.

Emma (2020)

Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. It's like a visually sumptuous Clueless done in period garb. If you enjoyed Greta Gerwig's Little Women, you should have a similarly good time with this movie.

Anya Taylor-Joy is gorgeous and pitch perfect in the lead role while being ably assisted by Johnny Flynn as her antagonistic soulmate. Bill Nighy can do no wrong.

Anime fans will probably get a big kick out of the nosebleed scene (which reportedly was an actual nosebleed and not faked).

My only major quibble is the musical score, which is otherwise excellent, but at times a bit too on-the-nose in playing up the comedic parts of the movie.

Glad I caught this just before the theaters shut down.
