Agreed. I especially like Citizens on Patrol (Bobcat Goldwaithe!!!), Operation: Miami Beach, and actually have an affinity for Mission to Moscow...I remember renting all of those over and over when I was a kid (at the VHS video store, way back when)...And I still remember the day the DVD boxset came out when I was still working retail. We got all of one copy and I picked it up the second the store opened. Actually had probably five or six customers come in after they got off work and they were pissed that we didn't have any more copies (I neglected to mention that it was me who purchased the one copy we received)...And Leslie Easterbrook was a smokeshow back in the day...

Family Plot - Hitchcock's last film. Not bad. I liked it better than a lot of the work he did during his final years, like Topaz and Frenzy. While I didn't really like the whole psychic angle, it was largely done tongue in cheek so it wasn't all bad. Bruce Dern, Karen Black, and William Devane were all pretty good. It was a little lengthy, but ended on a nice note. Just a decent movie, but nothing special.
The Man Who Knew Too Much - The James Stewart one from 1956. I still consider this lesser Hitchcock. It has all of the elements: a unique foreign location, an elaborate conspiracy, a child in peril, a couple forced to tackle things on their own largely without the help of the authorities, etc...But, it still comes across as a bit of a bore. The stakes seem to be there, and yet as a viewer I never felt a high level of suspense...And James Stewart can be hit or miss for me. Love him in stuff like Vertigo, Rear Window, and The Naked Spur, but sometimes find his folksiness a touch irksome. All in all, it was an okay movie, but on the lower end of Hitchcock's output...

Maybe you could bend your rules once in a while to catch a film that's worth a detour...

Personally I think the film itself is the important bit. The quality of the picture is just bonus. I still have a VHS player and watch films in that format sometimes when they are not available otherwise. Yes it's ugly but I get to see the film I'm interested in.

Maybe but if I watch something in SD and find out later there was a HD option I feel bad.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Saw it during the EPIX free trial run
It was pretty good and both Jack and Dern gave great performances
Kind of similar to Paradise Lost.

Ford v Ferrari (2019) — Well made sports-racing movie with excellent acting by Damon and Bale (no surprise there) and the racing sequences were great, not to mention the sound design. Kind of was concerned there wouldn't be enough story to fill the nearly 2.5 hour runtime, but this kept me engaged, though the ending was a bit anticlimactic. Still, good work from James Mangold. ****½/*****

Twilight Zone: The Movie - This is coming from a giant, giant fan of the original The Twilight Zone series: This movie sucks. So bad. I'd owned the DVD ever since it and Poltergeist came out on DVD on the same day way back when. Decided to pop it in finally. Hated it. I thought the first segment (directed by Landis, and yes, I'm aware of the tragic events that went on while it was filmed) was the best, with the racist getting his comeuppance. That was good. But it was mostly downhill from there. I absolutely hated Spielberg's segment and felt it was by far the worst. Joe Dante's segment was almost just as bad, but at least it had some kind of, sort of neat special effects. Still bad, though. And Miller's segment, which I had been lead to believe would be the best (and is based off of one of my favorite episodes from the original series) was just so-so. And the bookends for the movie weren't that great. This had so much potential but just didn't come together. Really disappointed in this one. I'll stick to the original series.

Child's Play 3 - Say what you will, I actually kind of liked this one. Not close to being on par with the first or second movie, but solid nonetheless. I thought the military school setting was unique. I thought the acting was surprisingly decent; Brad Dourif is almost always great, and it was nice underrated Andrew Robinson (Shoot to Kill, Dirty Harry) in a decent sized role. I also think the special effects hold up fairly nicely; Chucky looks very impressive, and the gore that is in the movie is well done. I don't know...I think this sequel is miles better than any of the Nightmare on Elm Street sequels...

Seed of Chucky - Loved this movie from the very start. Awesome opening credits. Fantastic first-person sequence to start the movie. Jennifer Tilly and Brad Dourif were awesome. Also loved the whole "meta" aspect of the movie, with Jennifer Tilly the actress and the dolls trying to re-animate themselves as humans. And I was already a giant Redman fan, and I thought he kicked ass in his role in the movie. Jason Flemyng was also good in a small role, and it was great seeing John Waters have a role in the movie (and the whole Glen/Glenda homage was handled terrifically). I thought the direction itself was fantastic. Not overly showy but not staid either; just very effective. Surprised to hear this movie get a lot of guff, as I think it's probably the second best in the series after the original Child's Play. Plan on checking out some of the special features later on...

Lost Highway (1997)
I clearly remember falling in love with the soundtrack of this film long before I had ever seen the film itself.
Strong visual & sound design. The film is a bit long in the tooth, even though it is mostly engaging throughout.

The 2019 reboot on CBS All Access is not worth the time either.

Supergirl (1984)
I had seen this when it got a VHS release in the 80s and didn't remember anything apart that Helen Slater was cute in a typical nice-girl blonde school girl way. On rewatching it yesterday I found it uninteresting. The villainess is bad, her henchmen (Peter Cook and Brenda Vaccaro) are useless, the love interest is terrible, the scenes with Peter O'Toole awful (a rip off of the Brando ones in Superman) and the action is just going nowhere. Way too much time spent in teenage drama and not a lot in scifi sequences.

Frozen (2013) Great animation and good voice talent, however pretty weak story but ultimately entertaining enough movie. Also found the music, outside of the song "Let It Go" (which was played to death for the past several years now) were rather forgettable and bland. ***/*****

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
The film seems to lose it's steam by the final act but so much before it is a load of fun.
Margot Robbie was great!

James Bond, The World Is Not Enough.
Pierce was VERY GOOD. He would be #3 after Connery & Craig for me.

It was entertaining though outside of Pete Davidson and Kathryn Morris as the mom there was nobody I recognized.
It had a TV movie quality to it though it was rated MA.

Call Of The Wild
Pretty nice adaptation from the book. The CGI for Buck is fantastic. The cinematography is also break taking. It makes you realize how difficult the early settlers had it without all of today's modern amenities.

Jojo Rabbit (2019) — Thought the first 35-40 minutes to be rather dull and unfunny, however the rest really brought the film together and made the first part make more sense what Waititi was doing. Some nice moments with Davis and McKenzie although can't say I fell in love with this, but still glad I watched. ***½/*****
