Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread
Made it an Alex de la Iglesia week and watched one of his movies a day starting with my favorite of his:

Then I watched:

It was ok and had some brilliant moments of comedy but then the theme gets dour with conspiracy leading to a bleak and fucked up ending. It's technically ok and the actors are great but it's a depressing flick.

Perfect Strangers is a remake of the Italian version that only came out 1-2 years before the spanish version. In this day and age of social media - wow, it really fired on all cylinders the fact that it took place in one location was great. It reminded me of Hitchcock's "Rope" a bit.
I'll give de la Iglesia credit - he always casts beautiful women in his films.

I watched Doc Hollywood tonight and I really enjoyed it. I had never watched it before. Michael J. Fox was great back in the day. Parkinson's sucks. 4/5

It was not great but a 21% score at Rotten Tomatoes is kind of harsh especially with all the bad horror movies out there.

My 4th Alex de la Iglesia film this week:

An entertaining comedic romp on the set of a new year's event taping where someone is offing the guests. It's definitely the lightest of the four films that I've seen of his this week, but the women are freakin' hot. Some of his regulars make appearances in this one, too.
This one is on Netflix right now.

Nothing all that special with a plot that's been done numerous times, but still an effective thriller with Gabrielle Union doing a good job in the lead. 3.0/5

Hostiles, with Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike. Good, but very bleak--probably because it's more realistic than most westerns. But, damn, there's not an ounce of happiness in this whole thing.

First Reformed - 4.5/5
A priest in small town upstate New York has a spiritual crisis when he tries to help the pregnant wife of a radical environmentalist who fears that her husband is becoming unhinged. Paul Schrader shows all the haters that he’s still got it by channeling the ghosts of metaphysical master filmmakers Carl Dreyer, Robert Bresson and Ingmar Bergman. One of the best films of 2018.

Finally saw this and really enjoyed it. I was surprised at how well it was able to include almost all of the MCU heroes and make everyone feel integral to the story.

Low-Budget Science Fiction film, evoking the visuals of Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Hardware & Body Parts.
Plot is a bit muddled (due to the film's experimental nature) but the film's visuals were strong enough to keep me engaged for 60+ minutes.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) — I've seen this twice now and while it is a very well made movie, and heads and shoulders above Justice League to say the least, I can't quite put this as one of the best comic book movies (I actually place Captain America: The Winter Soldier well above this)... yet, until I see Avengers 4 since this is only the first part.
Still, the performances were all great and the Russo Brothers did a wonderful job balancing so many characters with so much back story spanning 10 years and so many movies. 3.75/5

National Lampoon's Van Wilder (2002) – Perhaps the last good National Lampoon movie (for as much as that label was worth), enjoyed this more than when last saw it back in 2002/2003 even if Ryan Reynolds is pretty much playing the smart ass (with a heart) he normally does. I did genuinely several times and the story itself, simple and predictable as it was, was decent. Not a comedy classic, even by gross-out standards, still fun. 3.5/5

Surprised a smaller movie like Van Wilder got a UHD release.

Jodie Foster was great in this and maybe Jessica Lange (Blue Sky) stole the Oscar that year. No Blu-ray release for this movie.

Surprised something directed by Fred Durst would be entertaining to watch.
