That's for both movies, keeping in mind the 3rd movie wasn't originally planned, so it drops the budget from $150m/movie (x 2 movies) to probably closer to $115m/movie (x 3 movies).

I'll copy and paste my review from the other thread so it's in the right place:

liked it a lot, but didn't love it. There's no need for this to be three films, even with the appendices stuff cut in. In fact, the appendices stuff added almost nothing. The council sequence, while full of cameos that made the audience applaud, told us nothing and ground the movie to a complete halt. Radagast was flat out ridiculous, and I love Sylvester McCoy normally. But hey, if you want to hear Saruman make a magic mushroom joke, this is the movie for you!

That actually sounds harsher than I intended. The movie IS a lot of fun, but I couldn't help feeling like it could have probably told the whole story from the book in that same runtime. That being said, the entire goblin mountain sequence was exceptional, some of the best work Jackson has ever done. So it is a good time at the movies, just not a great time.

I'll also say this was clearly designed for 48 fps and after seeing a little bit of it that way, it was tough to go back to 24 fps. I'm looking forward to an HFR/Dolby Atmos presentation.

I gave it four stars, although on a different day I could knock it down to 3.5

visceral to a fault, but ultimately devoid of substance. i didn't hate it, but the magic was truly gone, unfortunately. looked as good as a "show-off" Blu-ray in IMAX HFR 3D though and for the look it was magic and gorgeous, but really nothing more. the 3D wasn't even as engrossing as Avatar, but worked for the most part.

and...i didn't even get to see the 9 minutes of Star Trek: Into Darkness which i was very much looking forward to as well bc they didn't show anything, no trailers, nothing.

I really enjoyed it. Thought it was amazing and had a blast watching. Never felt slow and compliments the LOTR trilogy in look and feel. I saw it in 2D and will probably see it in 3D on Sunday. Look forward to seeing the next two.

I think I will try to catch this tomorrow. I have to be in the right mindset to watch a prequel to the Lord of the Rings movies.

Plus, it's 2 hours and 46 mins, so I have to make the time for it.

Regular 3D. I live in a small town and they just got 3D capability recently. Don't see them getting the higher frame rate version anytime soon.

i think the only scene that looked really hokey was when the dwarves and Gandalf were careening down the inside of the goblin mountain on the bridge. anyone else see that? probably the result of the HFR, but everything else was crisp and beautiful.

Saw it in good old glorious 2d 24fps today. Pic looked great, but this has got to be one of the most notorious examples of the teal/orange color motif (see, http://forum.dvdtalk.com/movie-talk/...p-madness.html).

I enjoyed the movie and the pace (lifelong Tolkien fan and D&D vet). It quickly became apparent that Jackson is not simply making The Hobbit. He is instead using The Hobbit as a frame to create a prequel trilogy to The Lord of The Rings. If you go into the movie with that expectation, I think you will enjoy it more.

Hated it, I feel they missed out on the basic filmmaking 101 element of plot, character and story. This was all over the place.

Saw it. Liked it overall, but I can certainly understand why some wouldn't . The movie is good when it follows the story of the book, all else felt very superfluous. Radagast was completely without reason , and we didn't need that much LOTR foreshadowing

I saw the HFR version tonight, I'd like to peek at just a bit of the other version just to see if I could tell. It was pretty impressive in that respect.

A lot of the scenery looked a little 'too fake' in this one. I liked it well enough, but it's pretty much as expected, nothing really exciting, just some story telling and a journey. It is done well.

Why So Blu?

Just got back from my 3-D HFR showing and it was pretty fucking cool! It's jarring at first, but after 20 minutes my eyes adjusted. Not a peep from the crowd was heard. Seriously, this is some of the best goddamned cgi (photo realistic cgi) I have ever seen.

I know we can spoil in this thread, but i will scale it back.

I was expecting Radagast to be wasted and he wasn't. Seriously,



Props to Crixus from Spartcus on a job well done. He was badass.

The scene in the cave with Gollum was great.

And how fucking hot are the elvish women? That chick playing the flute was smoking hot. She can play my flute anytime.

Yeah, so the film was cool. I'd say that if you're tentative about seeing it in HFR - see it in 2-D first and then make the jump to the 3-D HFR.
