Beautiful compelling trailer. I love it when trailers simply interest you and not divulge too much.

Re: Upstream Color -- Dir: Shane Carruth (director of Primer)

In a rare instance of being able to see a (somewhat) anticipated movie before the rest of the country, I'll be watching this next Saturday. (I'm also going to try wait-listing for Before Midnight next Thursday, but I doubt I'll get in.)

Hope it doesn't suck.

Saw this tonight, and I am truly thankful that Shane Carruth is making movies. This is the reason why I love film.

I can't wait to check it out. I have the Blu-ray on pre-order, but may go see it before that anyway.

The Verge interviews Shane Carruth

http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/10/42...m-color-primer

important bits:
- A Topiary is a dead project (if anyone still has a copy of the script... PM me. Please)
- His next project is The Modern Ocean. "It’s a continuation of the emotional language that was built up for Upstream. It’s a tragic romance at sea in the world of commodities trading. It’s ships at war."
- He no longer has his original diagram for how Primer "works," so we're stuck with fan-made versions.
- He'll probably never go with traditional financing to make a movie. May go with Kickstarter next time.

Re: Upstream Color -- Dir: Shane Carruth (director of Primer)

I saw this last Friday at IFC theaters in NYC. Shane Carruth was there for a Q&A afterwards, although he evaded explaining the movie too much, and I couldn't think of a good question having not fully processed the film yet.

I do think it's a great film, but it's very different from traditional, established film structure. He plays with chronology, with sound and music, and with visuals that are not all literal. He talked in the Q&A about how he ended up stripping away dialogue from the script when he felt he could convey the same thoughts with sound or visuals.

Here's another good interview, although I'd recommend not reading this or any other interview until after seeing the movie:

I loved the experience of both watching it, as well as processing it long after. The sound design itself is oscar worthy. My one critique is that the main relationship of the film would be so much stronger if Carruth would cast an actor with a hint of charisma instead of himself.

I actually like Carruth as an actor. His acting is a bit subdued, but I don't find it wooden.

I remember I read a review of Primer prior to seeing it that described Carruth's acting as bad. I spent the entire film thinking that Abe was Carruth because, of the two main characters, I found Aaron to be better acted.

I'm kind of surprised more arty stuff like this can get funding from anyone at all. Malick at least has glowing critical praise and big stars who jump to work with him. I haven't seen Primer yet, but apparently Caruth's stuff is very odd and abstract. This will probably get very limited theatrical distribution, if any. He apparently financed Primer himself on a nonexistent budget, this looks like at least a slightly bigger production.

Carruth privately financed Upstream Color and is distributing it himself. It has played (and will play) a bunch of dates (all listed on upstreamcolor.com), but it's also getting a VOD release in May. Even the DVD/Blu-ray is being released under his own company (ERBP), which is out on May 7th.

So yeah... arty stuff like this isn't getting funding... this is another micro-budget film, shot on a Panasonic GH2, and released/distributed independently.

Hooray for modern media!

It's like the Kevin Smith / Red State model, but without the asshattery.

This looks incredibly intriguing but I still have no idea what any of it is about. I can't tell if that's a good or bad thing.

A quick plot synopsis is possible, but this film is probably best enjoyed going in blind.

Re: Upstream Color -- Dir: Shane Carruth (director of Primer)

If half of what I've heard about Primer is true, and this is anything like it, a plot synopsis in the traditional sense will probably be pretty difficult.

Saw this today and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. As mentioned above, the sound design is freaking amazing. Will certainly get this on Blu for more viewings.

Re: Upstream Color -- Dir: Shane Carruth (director of Primer)

Saw it last night and thought it was amazing. I had actually never seen Primer until a few days ago, so Shane Carruth is kind of a new discovery for me. I am really impressed by the guy.

Right now, this is my favorite movie of 2013.

Sigh...a very limited engagement (one showing daily from Tuesday through Sunday) starts tomorrow here, and I'm out of town until Monday morning.

Re: Upstream Color -- Dir: Shane Carruth (director of Primer)

I enjoyed this. Not as much as Primer (probably my favorite time travel movie) but it was interesting.

Less confusing than Primer yet at the same time almost less obvious...more metaphysical / less concrete than Primer's tiny hints.

I feel like he scraped close to the un-explainability of the Matrix sequels (which were so heavy on allegory that it fouled the plotline) but didn't quite go over the edge like they did.

I think I liked it a lot. Probably have to watch it again to be sure. Somehow this film brought to mind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (my 2nd favorite movie), Baraka, and Primer all tossed into a melting pot.

I already have this. I just need to need to be in the right mood to watch it.

amazon.ca and all local retailers didn't get their stock yet, so I do not have it. I was hoping to watch it this weekend... but I may just rent it on Vudu.

Re: Upstream Color -- Dir: Shane Carruth (director of Primer)

the "plot" is easy enough to discern. what it all means will take time.
