Neither was The Danish Girl, but both Russell and Hooper are multiple nominees (Hooper won one) so I think they just invite him every year he has a movie out.

I believe these are also organized/filmed around September. THR guesses which films are likely to be nominated, so they invite the people associated with them. It doesn't always work when a hyped film falls flat, as is the case with Joy.

A lot of these are filmed before all the awards stuff begin. Hence why you get someone like Boyega who go no recognition at all for Detroit.

I know it wasn't filmed that recently, but was it filmed before December? Because the awards hype for TDA (and other movies) started in December - even if no nominations were handed out yet. The buzz starts that early.

These are usually filmed in October if I recall correctly. The buzz for TDA started after screening at SXSW in March.
