Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Given how these two supernatural horror types seem to be a lot more popular than other types (like ghosts), just a poll to see which one people here prefer in movies (and even other forms of media, like TV and books).
So which do you like better: vampires or zombies? |
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Zombies.
Because vampires don't exist. That's silly talk. |
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Zombies. There seem to be better stuff w/ them in film.

Zombies.

Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Vampires for me please, especially the original Jerry Dandridge thanks!!
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
It depends. I like some zombies (and even some "zombies", like 28 Days Later) better than some vampires, and vice versa.
I like the classiness and craftiness of the vampire character, and I like the single- or no-mindedness focus of the zombie character. I think zombies are more overplayed right now in video games, although in board games it seems like they're just hitting the sweet spot (I want to get Zombicide). I think there's inherently fewer ways to interpret the archetype than the vampire character. I think I like "a" vampire better than "a" zombie, but I like zombieS more than I do vampireS. |

Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
I'm kind of sick of zombies personally. It's a fun genre but it just seems so overdone now days with all the video games, The Walking Dead, and a whole slew of crappy movies. The classic Romero films and stuff like Return of the Living are still great though. Not a huge fan of modern vampire films but I would say I like vampires better overall.

Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
I prefer vampires. I can't stand this zombie craze we've been in for the last couple years.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Prefer both, more along the lines that they are taken in a more "classical" or traditional context. Not really much into the whole "Twilight" or "Vampire Diaries" vampire genre, but I didn't mind the fast-moving zombies in the Dawn of the Dead remake or 28 Days Later.

Vampires. Smart and sexy evil is always better than stupid but persistent.
I believe the current popularity of zombies is that they are easy to animate with CGI. Paint them in gray and brown, don't worry about natural clothing, hair, or shadows, don't have to put in the work to make them move naturally, and they only require a single unique detail like a gaping chest wound to be finished. It's the movie monster equivalent of those featureless gray corridors in the old Doom game. |

Zombies are cool but they are boring.
Vampires are cool and interesting. I voted for Vampires. |
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Another vote for vampires. A much more versatile monster, IMO. Reflecting that, zombies have had a couple "boom" periods in the last 40 years, but vampire stories have been going steady for almost 100 years.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Lot more versatility to vampires IMHO - everything from Dracula to Buffy to I Am Legend to Lestat to admittedly awful Twilight. Zombies can be fun but rather one-dimensional.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
I voted vampires. They have a lot more personality and sex appeal. Zombies have no personality and are very unlikely to attract members of the opposite sex with their rotting flesh and lack of communication skills.
Best vampires- Lestat, Bill and Eric from True Blood, Nosferatu, Angel, Spike. |
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Despite the Beckinsale pic above, I hate vampires. Never been a huge fan of zombies either but between Zombieland and Walking Dead, I'm slowly coming around.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
I do like Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later. But I still prefer vampires.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
I did forget about Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland which I love both. I'd still go with vampires overall though as I find them more interesting.

Males are brainwashed to kill in many ways another human because they are zombies. Females are brainwashed to lust after vampires the undead, satanic beings from hell.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
You can craft a much more emotionally compelling story around a vampire, as witnessed by the dozens of television series to have done it. Zombies are very limited characters because they lack normal human personalities as storytelling devices. Zombies are hip right now because a whole generation of young kids grew up killing them in their videogames.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Vampires. Because they have personality and can think.
Zombies are never about zombies. It's about the stupid decisions people make dealing with zombies. |
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
I think zombies' main appeal has more to do with the apocalyptic nature of the scenario.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Zombies. I do like vampires too, but zombies are my thing.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Zombies!

I like 'em both, most zombie movies have been fun, but there have been a few really good vampire movies. I vote... ZOMBIES! |
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Like everyone else here I'm very much against the latest trend of the pussification of Vampires but I much prefer the old guard of vampires than zombies. There is a certain attraction to what they are capable of compared to mindless zombies. Vampires have depth, a humanity to them. Interview with the Vampire is an all time favorite of mine.
Another thing is that in order for a zombie apocolypse to be successful you need to be over run with zombies. A single vampire can kill for generations without being noticed. That's more frightening to me. The best part of zombie movies, IMO, are the humans and how their survival instincts kick in during it. In vampire movies, it's the vampires that are most interesting. |
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
there's only so much character you can put into zombies...the film is then made or broken by the human characters.
I enjoy Vampire more, because you can just do more with them |
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Zombies. Remember in the 90's when we craved zombie movies? Now, the market is flooded with every zombie scenario you can think of.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Both have some big PR problems lately. Zombies are being overrun as the zombies are to do themselves. Vampires are being teenified and losing their original menace.
Both work well in the hands of the right filmmaker. |
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
If this were the 70's, zombies. But every single angle has been covered for zombies. Total overkill (pun intended). It's easier to make vampires distinct. I don't think of Edward Cullen when I think of Gary Oldman's take on Dracula. I do tend to lump zombies together as an indistinct group.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
I liked vampires when they were bad guys, like Christopher Lee as Dracula. Their sole aim in life (in death?) was to bite people on the neck and drip blood when they did it. And the good guy was the one who put a stake through their hearts. Vampire as heartthrob? Forget it.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
One of my favorite movies has zombies so I'll go with that. Both can be stupid or great, depends on the movie.
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Vamps
|
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
Zombies are pretty boring, I like certain versions of vampires as they can be interesting but mostly sick of them as well. The main issue is Vampires tend to be characters, Zombies are usually just brain dead infectious monsters - they get that moment of shock when somebody turns into one, but otherwise it's all a bit weak.
So vampires win. Even if only slightly. |
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
I read something once that zombies tend to be more popular when Republicans are in power and vampires when Democrats are. I'll see if I can find it.
EDIT: Yep, here it is. To answer, it depends. Bad-ass vampires are great. Emo Twilight dipshits are not. Rage-zombies are great. The super slow and shuffling are less great. Overall, I prefer a cool vampire, followed by zombies. |
Re: Vampires or Zombies - Which Do You Prefer?
I've never been even remotely scared by a vampire movie. But Night of the Living Dead, both Dawn of the Deads, and 28 Days Later all gave me the creeps. So I vote zombies.
