How do you rate Nicolas Cage's career?
I just watched Seeking Justice last night on DVD. I thought it was a good little thriller and it got me thinking about Nicolas Cage's career. He's certainly starred in a lot of interesting films eg. Wild at Heart, Red Rock West, Vampire's Kiss and of course his Oscar turn in Leaving Las Vegas.
But he's had some duds too like The Wicker Man. Do you think he's had more hits than misses thoughout his career?

I think he's a great actor. To me Vampire's Kiss is an absolute classic as is Raising Arizona. But his quality control may have slipped a bit in recent years. I also have a soft spot for Con Air and Face/Off.

I think he is a very good actor. A lot of his movies are my absolute favorites. However, his close your eyes and gravitate method of picking projects has really hurt his career, especially in these last few years.

He's in my favorite movie, The Rock, so I'll give him lots of credit for that.
I also enjoyed the National Treasure series.

He's a good actor who would held in higher regard if he didn't fuck up his finances, thereby forcing him to make most of the crap he's done lately. But the fact that he still pops out the occasional gem is a reminder that he hasn't lost it yet.

good actor, somewhat overrated, who if not reigned in, overacts like crazy.
I enjoyed his early career way more than his latter.

I don't think he's ever been top tier. I think of him as a middle of the road actor who chooses very poorly at times. He's been good in films, and terrible in films.
If you think he's great I suggest you watch this

I just watched that Youtube clip showing "highlights" from The Wicker Man.
It is a shocking film but to be fair everyone associated with it was off their game. It was Neil LaBute's worst film as a director too.

With the right director (Lynch, Herzog, etc...) you can get a good performance out of him.
Suffering from John Travolta syndrome, quantity over quality.
He's got like 12 projects that are either filming or pre-production for the next 2 years.
Amongst those he does have some interesting ones with directors
Ryuhei Kitamura, David Gordon-Green, William Friedkin & Charlie Kaufman.

The guy was in Face/Off, The Rock, and Con Air - which are all probably in my top 10 action movies from the 90s.
While I respect actors that are selective about their roles, I also respect actors who love to act in all kinds of stuff (even if it's for commercial motives). Not all your movies have to be winners in order for you to have a good career / reputation by my standards.

Only a handful of actors have way more good movies than crap on their resume. Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood come to mind. Cage has not appeared in that classic like Brando,DeNiro and Pacino but his bad movies are not as bad as those guys.

Indeed. Actors who are willing to take risks and try lots of things are unfortunately putting their reputation on the line. Film fans tend to forget the good movies they've done and only focus on the bad ones when discussing the quality of an actor, even if it wasn't their performance that made something a bad movie.

Schizophrenic. He can be Keanu Reeves bad (e.g. Con Air ("She's my humminbuird..."), Wicker Man, Knowing), but pretty damn good, too (e.g. Adaptation, Lord of War, Kick Ass, Raising Arizona).
