Fathom Events? Anyone ever go?

Re: Fathom Events? Anyone ever go?
Screenvision did Sondheim's Company. I didn't get a chance to see it, so I have no idea if it was a DCP or satellite feed. However, Sony's (ill-fated) The Hot Ticket were DCP releases as I saw Rent that way.
I've only seen two Fathom events. The Descent which was a "sneak preview," so there was actually a 35mm print involved. The other being the Coachella documentary which looked like shit as it was a satellite feed.
I'll start giving Fathom my hard earnedmoney time when they do actual DCP releases a la Lawrence of Arabia.

it's too bad 'The Hot Ticket' went belly up, since the quality of 'Rent' and 'Cirque Du Soleil' looked utterly fantastic.

Re: Fathom Events? Anyone ever go?
Has anyone attended these recently? I looked at the 2016 schedule and was planning on seeing most of these showings, but doubt I'll return after my experience with Butch Cassidy this week. It became pretty clear that my local theatre couldn't care less about the presentation. When it was time for the movie to start, the projector came on and just showed a blank screen for the first 7 minutes while the audio played. It wasn't until another patron went and told someone that they restarted the film. Once it began, the image was framed incorrectly, with some of it projected onto the curtains, the sides were keystoned, and the top and bottom of the image were distorted. They also never even turned off the theatre lights. Has anyone else had similar experiences? I love the idea of being able to see classic films in theaters that I never had the chance to see before, but it defeats the purpose if they have piss poor quality control, and charge a premium to see the film on top of that.

Sounds less of a Fathom Events issue and more of the theatre issue, which could've happened for any film you went to see... new or old. Maybe find another theatre that is local and playing them?

The classic movies aren't a Fathom event. That's a Cinemark thing.
My Butch Cassidy went very well. Not an issue. I'd never seen the film in a theater. Haven't seen the DVD since... probably 2011. Big coke and big popcorn to enjoy like a fat fuck... and I loved it. Got there in time before all the old people came in, perfect seating, etc. Had a great time. My Cinemark does treat their theater w/ a damn. Considering we're kind of artsy here... it'd be a big deal for them to keep up the quality of anything art related.

Cinemark is one of the leading theatres that does it... but it's run by Fathom Events and TCM: http://www.tcm.com/fathom/ The Cinemark I go to (and I imagine most do this) offer the whole series for $35 bucks. Cinemark mixes in other non Fathom ones though too for the series.

You should speak with the theater with your concerns. At a minimum should get a pass for another movie.

I've been to a few Fathom screenings, mostly Rifftrax live events but also the REM documentary. I've had no problems at any of them, always a great experience. As others have said, it sounds like the problems you had were theater related.
I haven't been to one of the opera showings, but my piano teacher tries to catch them all and loves them. She has been encouraging me to go to one. For people who live in deep South Texas (or those in similar circumstances) and don't have easy access to operas or special showings of this type, it's an incredible opportunity.

I have some friends who love the opera stuff. I've always been interested in opera but been underwhelmed the few times I've gone. Perhaps this would be a low-cost option to try.
I was interested in Oklahoma! but was too lazy to check the times, and it was during a busy period anyway. I might look into The King and I, and Breakfast at Tiffany's because my kids are Audrey Hepburn nuts.

I haven't been in a bit, but saw Blazing Saddles in coming at the end of the month. A no-brainer for me. Might even take my 15 year-old.

Re: Fathom Events? Anyone ever go?
Thanks for the feedback. To be clear, I wasn't blaming Fathom, but trying to find out if it was a problem with my local theatre (Regal) versus it being a more widespread issue where a lot of theaters just don't seem to put too much emphasis on these events. I know the film is a digital download, so I shouldn't expect it to be 35/70mm quality, but I was just really letdown with the overall presentation.

These Fathom events sound like the old closed circuit tv broadcasts to theaters before cable.
If you wanted to see the Indy 500 or boxing matches like Ali v Fraser they were shown in theaters live on the movie screen. Not available on tv.

Just now saw this thread... I went to the Butch Cassidy screening as well, as I'd never seen the movie. It was.... okay. Enjoyed the movie though.
1) It was expensive (like $13 for a matinee, because it was a "special event").
2) The Fathom ads were just total overkill... they literally played 35 minutes of "Fathom Events" ads before the movie started. Including playing through the same trivia questions at least 3 times. I figured I was just being grouchy, until other people in the theater started grumbling and complaining as well.

I went and saw The Revenant yesterday and saw that Butch Cassidy played earlier this month, and saw you could have paid something like $35 for all the movies this month and some of next month. $13 for one movie is ridiculous for a matinee and for an old movie that unless it's getting an new remastered Blu Ray release I can't see that pricing justified. I'd understand if it was a Rixx Trax live event, but I don't even think those cost that much, and those are night showings.

I'm going to the Lawrence of Arabia showing this afternoon at 1pm. I know its not a 70mm showing or anything like that but I'm pretty excited to see it on the big screening.

I've had some gift cards for my birthday and used them to get tickets to 3 upcoming Fathom Events: Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Shawshank Redemption, and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.

Braveheart is back in theaters for its 25th anniversary on March 22-23rd. I'll be going that Sunday Afternoon as I wasn't old enough to see it in theaters in 1995.

Well hell, doesn't that age me. I was a projectionist at the time and built this a few nights before to show as a sneak. Back in the days of film. I think we had that movie on various screens for about 4-6 months. Still holds up really well.
