Re: Skyfall (Mendes, 2012) — The Double-O Reviews Thread

Mendes totally stole the whole Old School vs. New School thing from Live Free or Die Hard.

I saw this on Sunday and absolutely loved it. A very tiny nitpick, but it bugged me that Bond didn't close up his storage unit before taking off in the Aston Martin. I hate it when characters don't do simple things that real people do, even if they are British superspies. But that didn't take me out of the movie. Much.

Dark Shadows?? Jesus fuck..
The most recent movie that wowed me in that regard was Prometheus. I thought it was a gorgeous looking movie. (The idiotic character choices and stuff on the other hand...)

I would agree with that. Tomorrow Never Dies is extremely entertaining. Skyfall is a better movie, but Tomorrow Never Dies is more entertaining/fun.

Agreed, TND had it all. I may biased since its the first I saw in theaters, but damn is it great.

Tomorrow Never Dies has held up well, especially in the light of the last two Brosnan outings. Although other than Christmas Jones, The World Is Not Enough isn't SO bad.

All I remember about The World is Not Enough is Denise Richards: Scientist, "Christmas only comes once a year" and <iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/21104021?badge=0" width="500" height="281" frameborder="0" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe>

Garbage - The World is not Enough from Cherryl on Vimeo.

Am I missing anything?

I actually like The World Is Not Enough a lot. Denise Richards went a long way towards bringing that movie down, but even that horrific bit of miscasting doesn't quite ruin the movie. The rest of it is really pretty good.

But it's not as good as Tomorrow Never Dies or Goldeneye. It is a lot better than Die Another Day, though. But then, what Bond movie isn't better than Die Another Day?

The World is Not Enough has one of my favorite opening action scenes of the franchise. Denise Richards is awful though, and Goldeneye is definitely the best Brosnan outing.

I'll give you two: Quantum of Solace and A View To A Kill.

I like Tomorrow Never Dies because it's one of the few times I've seen the "Bond girl" contribute more than just sex. As in, Michelle Yeoh kicks ass.

I'd rank Die Another Day below both Moonraker and A View to a Kill.

To each their own. That motorcycle chase at the beginning might beg to disagree. :-)

I know I'm in the extreme minority but I like my Bond movies to have fantastical elements to it. In the end, the villain had no more motivation than revenge because of his mommy issues with M. That type of stuff just doesn't seem like something worthy of Bond's involvement.

I also think it was a little too heavy handed with the past-his-prime quips.

I think it was worthy of Bond's involvement because of the future threats from Silva, the assault on MI6 and his fellow agents being killed because their covers were blown. His motivation is an important factor, yes, but the crimes that he carries out are what would drive Bond to action.

World is Not Enough is one of my favorites as well, despite Denise bringing down every scene she is in. Horrible line delivery and I cant buy her as a scientist.

But that wonderful opening with the explosion inside MI6, the Garbage theme, and Sophie as the villain all make a great Bond flick.

You know what Craig's Bond's are missing? A ski scene. Seems like Bond is always skiing.

Interesting. My parents grew up on the old-school Bonds and made similar comments regarding this one. They acknowledged that it was a great movie, but that they missed the over-the-top factor. I was able to get them to admit that it all got ridiculous with the Brosnan era however.

the whole movie was about M's and Bond's relationship, little seen, but oft felt as it is. that was his motivating factor for it all and it paid off in spades.

I agree to being a fan of the fantasy stuff also. The gadgets, extreme escapes, etc. It's what sets him apart from other action heroes. I mean its escapism, and no one can do the shit he does anyway, so why not have some fun with it?

Current Bond is just a bi-product of Die Another Day taking it too far, and Bourne being such a success.

I dunno. I like Bond not being as fantastical. I want to believe in a more realistic character. Yes, he still does crazy shit but he feels realer. I mean...Craig at least looks like he can do the shit he does.

It came out this year and I don't know if you like to watch old movies so I picked the most recent.

Exactly. That's why Quantum of Suck was so horrible. It was the most generic action movie that just happened to have a character named James Bond in it. You have to give the character something else to distinguish him from every other action guy out there other than his name.

Re: Skyfall (Mendes, 2012) — The Double-O Reviews Thread

I've seen it twice now; I'd easily place it in my top 5 bond films, falling short of Goldfinger and Casino Royale. It's a fantastic film, but its hard to overlook some of the flaws.

I feel it kind of falls apart in the 3rd act - Home Alone with goofy Bond references. If it wasn't for that last half hour or so, this would have scored much higher in my books. Still, one of my favorite films of the year.

4 Stars.
