Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015, Abrams) S: Hamill, Ford, Fisher
Awhile back I posted and said I was re-watching the PT. At that time I had finished AOC and lamented because I remembered them being bad, but I didn't remember just how bad they were.
Well, I took a break and just now finished Revenge of the Sith. Not sure if my expectations were lowered, but it really wasn't that bad! In fact, I'd almost say it was good. If you completely skipped espiodes I and II, I this would have been a decent prequel. It would have been nice to have more practical effects, but the CG is leaps and bounds above the first two (though not without flaws). The dialogue and acting are on par with the classics. The story actually progresses and communicates a point. I have gone to the dark side ... I actually liked Episode III. Nooooooooo!

I'm seeing an 11:15pm show tonight. Reserved my seat dead center of screen. Of the 100+ seats, only 21 are sold so far.

So the runtime says 135 minutes. I assume that includes the end credits, so the actual movie will be about 2 hours, 8 minutes or so?

Welp, I'm about to head out for an early dinner and then it's off to the theater. I sincerely hope no disturbed individuals attempt any mass shootings tonight.

It's faster and more intense? Most of the issues with acting in the series are more attributable to the material. Yes, Portman is a better actor than what she delivers here. Yes, Hayden Christianson is questionable at moments. But in this film the flaws are much less evident than in the previous two. Equating it to the OT, the same caliber performance will come off better when acting against practical effects than a green screen.
Agreed, I'm not saying it is perfect. I'm saying it is much better if you actually wipe out those first two. Most of the flaws are only there because of TPM and AOTC. Without those, they are not necessarily noticeable.
The final battle was decent, but it lost effect when we knew the outcome.
I'll admit the Emperor thing bugged the shit out of me. What can the Force do and what can't it do, because there are some inconsistencies there. I hate to attribute things outside of the movie, but is it possible the Jedi were losing touch with the Force? I believe there was a line from Mace Windu to this effect. When they talk about the Chosen One bringing balance, maybe they weren't talking about "good" vs. "bad" as much as just being in touch with the Force.
Yeah. No. The acting is still bad. Portman for her life couldn't save the dialogue. The final duel has no drama. It's just two guys swing lightsabers w/ no real dramatic pull to it. Also... I'm not sure how the fuck the Jedi couldn't tell that Palpatine was a baddie. The script made so goddamn fucking obvious w/ the lack of subtlety in it that you'd think they'd just take the bitch out ASAP.

Guaranteed people with lightsabers will have them confiscated- they are doing that at my theater. Same goes for masks.
Unfortunately in today's world you just can't do that anymore.

There is a lightsaber propped up in the seat next to me. I have seen 5 in total so far. Two guys were doing lightsaber dualing. So, it's cool at this AMC.

Hope those getting to see it have a blast. I'm not able to go until next week.
I really don't know how this movie will be judged. What would our eyes/hearts see and feel if E1-3 didn't exist?

I feel much safer knowing the theaters are confiscating imaginary laser swords at the door, but failing to patrol audiences and notice any real threats.

Arclight posted an Instagram pic and mentioned that they have had special equipment installed to project SW.

I sat between a Jedi Knight and a Tusken Raider who came with his mother. It was awesome.

I have never seen the theater packed as much as tonight. 6 Star Wars showings let out at one time. Didn't help that a group of cosplayers (and an R2D2) getting pics taken. It was a very cool and exciting atmosphere.

I saw an 830 showing and we could hear the people in the 7:00 clapping during our film as theirs ended.
