Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger Returning for King Conan: The Legend of Conan
I didn't think there was a problem with Arnold's age so much in Terminator 3. The film was just kind of a stinker and felt like it was trying to live off the success of it's predecessor. I think that film was kind of a period in his career where he was just kind of burnt out on acting and just taking roles that he didn't care as much about. He seems to have a new found energy since his comeback after finishing his term as Governor of California so I'm curious about Terminator: Genesis and hold out hopes it will be good. I'm very much excited for King Conan too though.

He looked rough in T3. In T2 he was still good.
I'm very iffy for Genesis. Sounds convoluted for the sake of complexity but the casting of Jason Clarke does interest me. That guy seems to impress me.

Well considering that Terminator 3 was made twelve years after Terminator 2 though obviously he was going to look older. I really have high hopes for Genesis I guess. It seems like the filmmakers are taking a risk with the way they're approaching the film, but I like the fact that they are trying something different while still paying homage to the films that came before. I think if it's done right it could be awesome.

Arnold Schwarzenegger still has every intention of making Conan 3, which has generally been going by the name of The Legend of Conan any time it comes up in conversation, which has been happening about once or twice a year lately. Speaking at a Q&A in Edinburgh (via The Arnold Fans), Schwarzenegger described the film as " I’m sitting on the throne for years and years - decades, and then all of the sudden, the time comes when they want to overthrow me. So that story WILL be told and that movie WILL be done."
Interestingly enough, he referred to it as Conan the Conqueror, which was long thought to be the Conan 3 title in the post Conan The Destroyer era. It's not clear if this is an official name change. Mr. Schwarzenegger also confirmed that the script is done "and we are now looking for directors."

Chris Morgan, the Producer of the movie, says "The Legend of Conan is dead":

Have there been any updates on The Legend of Conan, the sequel to the original 1982 Conan the Barbarian? I know you were working on that at one point.
Not so much. That’s kind of a longer story. At the end of the day, the studio decided that they weren’t gonna make that. I gotta say, it’s honestly a heartbreak. I love that first movie so much, so much, it’s one of my favorite movies. We had Will Beall do a draft on [the Legend of Conan script]. He killed it. Our take was Conan, 30 years later, a story like the Clint Eastwood Unforgiven. It was so awesome. Ultimately, the budget was big, the studio was not really sure of the title, and the relevance in the marketplace. They ended up letting it go. I think they’re gonna look to do a TV show or something with it. But just to be associated with it, pitch it to Arnold, have him get so excited, there was a moment of magic for me, personally [laughs]. You never know, down the road we may revisit!

With the popularity of Game of Thrones and Arnold being on board, it seemed like a no brained to get this done.
Maybe the failure of the last Conan movie a few years ago did it in.

As much as I love Arnie -- he has not been economically viable since he came back to film after being Governor. I will say that he has done great work in some of the films he's been in, but they have not made any money.
Also, it's Conan, and the one with Jason Momoa bombed, I think. Yes, I know Conan was great with Arnold, but the fact that the last one bombed and Arnie's newer films have also bombed does not give the studios hope for a return on investment. It's business. $$$$$
This doesn't mean they won't put Arnold in any new films. Aftermath cost 10.5 million to make. These are the only ones he will get work from going forward. Hell, he turned down The Predator, because it was a cameo.

Yup, seems like purely a business decision. Arnold is simply not a box office draw anymore, especially now pushing 70. Spending $100M plus on this with Arnold would have been a bad investment.
Arnold is probably better off starring in some low budget limited theatrical/straight to video Lionsgate Premieres like he's doing with Aftermath. That is if he wants to continue working.

I really hope it's called "Conan The King," and NOT "King Conan" just for consistency.

Whoa! It only took 24 years since this thread was started to finally get the ball rolling. Rather disappointed that John Milius isn't involved, be he hasn't directed anything since 1991 and hasn't had a produced screenplay since 2001. I wasn't aware he had a stroke in 2010.

Milius is without a doubt unable to direct, but I hope they at least take some parts of his unproduced "King Conan" script that allegedly exists.

The only trouble now is Arnold’s age. By the time he has a finished script and if Disney officially gives the green light, Arnold will be about 80 or 81. Will he even be a draw?

More important, Trachtenberg and Arnold in a Predator movie. Less important, a Commando 2, though it would be fun if they got Alyssa Milano for that.

I highly doubt McQuarrie is going to look over and mess with other people’s who took stabs at this years ago.
