Animal Farm (2026, D: Serkis)
Andy Serkis is set to direct a mo-cap version of Animal Farm. With his experience this could be interesting.

Read about this. I'm excited for Serkis. He probably knows more about the technology than anyone else. Famous directors included.
While I can't say I've a great interest in the story, though I do remember it, Serkis and the use of the tech for it does have me interested.
Good luck, Serkis.

Interesting. Why use mocap for a film that's all animals, though? It's not like King Kong, where the mo-cap creature was an ape, whose motions we can mimic.

Like Groucho said...I think this'll be an anthromorphic animal type of thing. I think we've had Animal Farm go like that before in a movie.

it's been like since the eighth or ninth grade since I read it. That was like...1999-2000 or 2000-2001. I think me not remembering that tidbit...is perfectly understandable especially since it didn't leave an impact on me like Heart of fucking Darkness did when I was a Junior in HS.

Well it's an extremely important piece of literature, has a very simple plot and mirrors what actually happened in Russia after WWII, so I just figured most educated people were familiar with it.

I am familiar w/ it. Just didn't remember it the way I thought I did...like about the pigs. I do remember it being horrifying at times.

It's one of the most referenced works of literature in the 20th century. My comment about two legs good, four legs bad, and what happens to the pigs is not an obscure reference.

And everyone being equal but some are more equal than others. I wonder if they'll wear special suits to try to actually get the motions of these animals down correctly. Like...have two people in a horse suit with hooves and green dots and be Boxer or something.

Little known fact: Andy Serkis directed the mo-cap cut-scenes for the video game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West:

Say what you will about the game itself, the mo-cap performances in the cut-scenes are excellent.
As for the Animal Farm film and how they'll incorporate mo-cap, the article in the OP has Serkis commenting on that:
So mo-cap is only one animation tool they're looking into using for this film. It sounds like some mo-cap may be facial performances only, and likely the final film will use a blend of techniques for each character depending on the shot.

"It is quite a wide canvas as to how much and how far we can take performance capture with quadrupeds and how much we will be using facial [capture]. We are not discounting the use of keyframe animation or puppeteering parts of animals. We are in an experimental phase; it’s terribly exciting."

Sounds interesting.
Probably facial animation so they can emote better.
Prior to that, he did the same for Heavenly Sword. It was actually part of selling points listed on the back of the game case.

I think they should mo cap actual animals. And then when the pigs walk on two legs, mo cap a Gorilla. And then for the behind the scenes doc, they should mo cap the cast and crew.

12 year bump...
Serkis started production on this in 2022. It is mentioned in this article about LOTR that it is wrapped: https://deadline.com/2024/05/the-lor...gy-1235917510/
