Re: Dredd 3D (Travis, 2012) — The Reviews Thread

This might be a stupid question, but why hasn't a Kickstarter started by the filmmakers for a sequel?

There is a Facebook page & Petition I noticed, but no Kickstarter. Didn't 'Veronica Mars' get a ton of dough for a film through Kickstarter?

They probably wouldn't be able to raise another 45-50 million for a sequel. They could totally get 3-5 million, but that won't come close to fully funding Dredd 2.

One of the producers addressed the Kickstarter thing in two ways:

a.) This would require way way more money than a Veronica Mars movie.

b.) He himself did not feel right asking fans for money.

Thank you both for clearing that up for me!

This just hit Netflix. Watch it if you haven't already.

The movie is a lot of fun. Tight script. Brutal action. With all of the calm, cathartic "drug" sequences in there. The whole movie works really well.

Many movies are too wordy and convoluted for their own good. Dredd is a simple movie that shuts the fuck up and delivers the goods.

I would rather not have another movie. ROBO COP, KICK-ASS, THE CROW were very good and the sequels sucked.

Oh God, I understand and almost agree with wm lopez, what is happening

In the case of Dredd, however, it seemed intended to kick off a series of films, as opposed to the films wm lopez mentioned with their origin one-and-done stories.

Re: Dredd 3D (Travis, 2012) — The Reviews Thread

Dredd was envisioned as the first part of a trilogy. And one of the two proposed sequels was to feature the Dark Judges.

I'm guessing, although a trilogy, each film would be a standalone entry.

Watched this on Netflix. It was okay. Nothing special and not enough story or characters to warrant a trilogy.

Sorry you feel that way, Brack. As for warranting a trilogy, while the first film was indeed a smaller affair, the comic has been going on for decades - there's a vast array of stories and characters to pull from.

Since it's a very weird sci-fi fantasy world, there's all sorts of loopy directions it could go. One of Judge Dredd's recurring villains is a Tyrannosaurus Rex, because reasons.

Which is exactly why I didn't understand going the self contained building, weird drug dealer route. Just by-the-numbers stuff. The psychic stuff was okay, but like everything else, underdeveloped. I kept waiting for the movie to start, but it never did. It felt like one long set piece. I'm glad it has its fans, it wasn't terrible.

I thought it was refreshing to have a comic book movie that didn't try to overstuff the first film with origin and fan service. A quick voice over and we're into the action. Instead of trying to be every Judge Dredd story in one film, it was a contained story that ended with the possibility of more to come. I liked that.

I'm fine with that concept, I just didn't like the contained story or characterizations, or lack thereof. There just wasn't enough there for me.

When I finally got around to watching Dredd I was a bit surprised that it was basically Die Hard with a few science fiction elements. Being a familiar with the source material, I was a bit taken aback by just how small and intimate it was; I put it down to budgetary issues.

I would have liked to have seen more of the abnormal denizens. The gangsters in Dredd were very human.

Keep in mind that aside from budgetary issues, this was also meant to serve as an introduction to Dredd's world for new viewers. If you put in a T-Rex as a villain, it would have been too weird for most people. The sequels would have more leeway, assuming anyone saw the first one.

Knowing and acknowledging that there are deformed mutants gives way for their introduction in sequels. Although this was very much like The Raid, I still enjoyed the simplistic, straightforward action set piece.

Yup. What was refreshing is that the movie basically depicted an average slow Tuesday for Dredd.

imo it just wasn't very interesting. A few cool scenes here and there, strung together by meh. It's the same reason I didn't like The Raid.

Exactly. This was normal to him. It was very funny as well.

It's a pretty effective nuts-and-bolts action flick that does what it says on the tin. It's actually riddled with cliches (The veteran with the rookie under his wing, etc.), and it has none of the social satire or intelligent edges that Robocop had. Plus it tends to mistake explicit literalism-showing every bullet, every drop of blood, every bit of grime, everything in slow motion, etc.-as actual content, which is becoming a chronic problem with action flicks these days. But for action fan hankering for the 80s glory days when everything was up to 11, violent as hell, had zero interest in a PG-13 rating, it was lots of explosive fun and good at what it did. One critic whose name I can't remember aptly described it by saying was sort of like a gun-it only really has one function, but it does it really well. I'd be up for a sequel, but bring some more auteurist chops next time, Travis feels a bit like a gun for hire and apparently he got locked out of the editing room, as the writer and producers sort of saw him as a means to an end.

I rather didn't like Kick-Ass, but that's neither here nor there. In any case, this movie actually has a pretty vast comic book mythology to draw upon for a sequel, which those movies didn't really.

It was pretty black humor if there was any, and I didn't pick up on much of it. Urban was great though, he plays such a one-note character really well.

It's all deadpan humor. For instance, at the end when the Chief Judge asks Dredd what hat happened in Peach Trees he calmly replies "drug bust". All that was missing was a shrug. Then there was the bit when Anderson tells Dredd that Kay is thinking about going for Dredd's gun. The deadpan delivery by Urban is flawless.

This was the first time that I wished the two heroes at the end kissed. Olivia Thirlby was so freaking cute.
