Re: what is your favorite movie ?
WEST SIDE STORY was my favorite film growing up. I saw it 22 times in theaters from the ages of nine to 18. I last saw it in 1995 while doing a paper on realism in film for Graduate School. I had a very strong emotional reaction to it at that time, which kind of freaked me out. I've avoided it since then. There are way too many personal connections between the film and my youth and key relationships, some of them with highly negative implications, to allow me to continue to consider it my favorite film. It certainly had a huge impact on me, for better or worse.
Without it, I'm not sure I have a single favorite. There are a number of films I would consider favorites in different genres for different reasons, such as these:
KING KONG (1933) - monster
THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946) - drama
WHITE HEAT (1949) - crime
THE SEVEN SAMURAI (1954) - historical drama
IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD (1963) - comedy
THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963) - war
PLANET OF THE APES (1968) - sci-fi
THE WILD BUNCH (1969) - western
8-DIAGRAM POLE FIGHTER (1983) - kung fu
MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO (1988) - anime

You know, for a second I thought this thread might ACTUALLY follow the OP, and everyone would just post a shot of their favorite film.
But, nope, internet posterity demands we get a bunch of fucking lists.

Star Wars. Probably seen it hundreds, maybe even near a thousand times as the movie never gets old.

Yeah I'm going to have to go with Star Wars... I know everyone prefers Empire, and I cant necessarily disagree with it being a superior film, but I always go back to the first.
On another day I could go with The Godfather.
