Batman (1989) vs Batman Returns

A lot of people in the DKR reviews thread seem to prefer Batman Returns, but I zone out in the 2nd act every time I've ever seen it. I mean sure it seems like Bruce/Alfred give Vicky Vale the goods at the drop of the hat in the 1st, but I mean look at her. And Jack is Jack.

Voted for '89. Even though Walken's "You ready to go 15 rounds with Muhammad Shreck?" is my favorite line of both movies.

I was 10 when the original came out, and was a huge impact for me. I remember not liking Returns as much when it came out. But now it gets the edge. I dislike how everything is obviously filmed on a small set, but the dark tone works for me.

Returns.

I don't think Batman holds up well - at all. Nicholson's Joker is the best thing about it.

Returns had better style, good characters and actors. Plus, it was the first one I saw in theaters.

Over "I didn't ask" and "Never rub another man's rhubarb?"

89 for me. I really like the style of Gotham.

Batman (89)...feels more like a superhero movie and less like "A Tim Burton Film," which is what Returns feels like to me.

89 for me too. I really hate the Penguin. I think Catwoman is pretty great but it just gets too nuts at the end. I was more forgiving of it as a kid but I just recently watched the back half of Returns and had forgotten they did things like taking the time to build a mini-Batmobile for Penguin to control the real one with. Just dumb, cartoony stuff.

Batman by far. I just recently watched them both again and I really don't think Batman Returns has held up at all and I used to actually like it a lot more. Absolutely cannot stand DeVito as Penguin. Just so over the top and weird/gross and the mayor plot is just so retarded and over the top (even for a comic book film). I also am not a big fan of how Catwoman seemed to have a supernatural element to her but I did like Pfeifer in the role. Keaton was good as Batman too. I much prefer Batman as a film though.

Neither are very good films but Returns is fucking horrible. The only reason why anyone would say they like it better is because it's cool to say you like Returns better.

Can I change my answer? I decided I liked Returns better.

I prefer the '89 film. It seemed more serious, Gotham looked like a crime ridden city, Bruce Wayne had some great scenes, and Nicholson as the Joker was great.

Returns was way too cartoony for me. Gotham now looked like a gothic Toyland, Danny DeVito was just annoying and I really didn't like things like the penguins with rockets.

I'm sure the Christmas season was mostly responsible for that. And I'll echo those who still get a kick out of Pfiefer's Catwoman.

When I first saw Returns in theaters, one thing that I was (Suprisingly) bummed about was that there was no return of Alexander Knox (Rob Wuhl). Granted, there wouldn't have been nothing for him to do in Returns' storyline, but I still wish another familiar face could've popped up to prevent the distant feeling I had between this and the previous film....Even if he had the same amount of screentime as Gordon, I would've been fine.

Speaking of screentime, I'm still puzzled by Vincent Schiavelli's high-billing in the opening credits. Recieving about 5th billing for barely a full minute of footage?

I'll argue that the reason why someone would say that both films are horrible is because it's the cool thing to say ;) It's the 89 film for me just for the nostalgia. I must of seen it 50 times in my lifetime and I didn't even own the VHS! I love returns now though for being dark in tone and rich in character development.

Supposedly for the third Batman Burton wanted Mickey Dolenz to play the Riddler in a Charles Manson inspired way with a question mark sliced into his forehead and we would've had Billy Dee as Harvey Dent. I really wish that would have happened.

Yeah, okay whatever you say.

I guess I'm just one of the cool kids....Batman Returns.

Batman Returns is the only Batman film that even comes close to showing a convincing human emotion. It is by far the best out of them all (including Nolan's).

This pretty much sums up my feelings as well, although I just watched most of Returns the other day and found myself liking it more than I expected to.

You don't think the beginning of Batman Begins had any kind of believable human emotion?

This argument is great because I really don't give a fuck, I mean if it's on TV I'll watch it but I'm not invested in either movie.
