I'm more interested in the next David Lynch and Cronenberg.

His career is sort of parallel to PT Anderson's, and he loves his schlock storylines.

I hope none of them will be the next Paul Thomas Anderson, and instead develop a unique creative vision.

I'm pretty sure he was kidding. Everybody knows Bay is garbage.

Ugh. I have no idea where to start. But saying "the next" makes almost no sense.

1. A debut film that gathers attention and acclaim.
2. An indulgent style that is a joy to watch (definately Refn).
3. Indulgence in melodrama and things constantly happening and changing. So much shit happens in Magnolia, that it's like the "24" of dramatic film.
4. He quickly latched onto a cast of actors and used them over and over.
5. Creating a few films that immediately earn attention as a director that sells the ticket without question.

I wouldn't really know what else would "make" the next PTA. That shit could get really deep. And stupid.

So what's really good about PTA movies? They're beautiful. The editing, music and sound design is always a joy. Those long shots where the actor is forced to be on display for a long time - I think it's fascinating when you get one shot, instead of a bunch of edited together bits and pieces of different takes. The melodramatic fiction in his movies is delightful - it's cooked and unreal - but a lot of fun.

The next PT Anderson? I don't know, but I'm eager to see what Shane Curruth is planning.

No one, probably for a long while. It'll have to be somebody that can make two masterpieces and one very, very good film by the age of 30. Rare these days because most young directors are probably making absurd gross out comedies or some horror movie schlock.

Steve McQueen

2 for 2 and his next film 'Twelve Years a Slave' with Fassbender, Pitt & Ejiofor looks promising.

The next P.T. Anderson will be his son, whom he will also name P.T. Anderson. Or some random baby whose last name is Anderson and his parents name him something where if you shorten his first name and middle name to just initials would equal P.T.

I've been asking a similar question for decades now..."Who is the next P.T. Barnum?"

Yeah. This.

That'd be like asking who's the next Kubrick? No. Just no. There will never be another PTA like the PTA we have. We may have those influenced by him at the most but not literally be the "next PTA" in film. I'd rather at the very most..be influenced by his direction but take that...and make it their own w/ something original (heh) from within themselves.

This PTA love is a little too much. This is a borderline cringeworthy thread. He's a very good director but he isn't THAT good to have a thread where no director compares to him. He has a good resume but he isn't the best thing going right now. He's had one movie(TWBB) that I really loved but outside of that nothing that I would qualify as movies that are masterpieces. He's a good director with plenty of room to grow for greatness, let's leave it at that for now.
