Oscar-Winning Composer Marvin Hamlisch Dead at 68

I suppose this could go in the music forum, but he did score 40+ films.

Marvin Hamlisch, who wrote the scores for films and shows including The Sting and A Chorus Line, has died in Los Angeles aged 68.

RIP. I played pit band for A Chorus Line in college (so I refuse to use a clip from the movie travesty), and for the last few years he's been the conductor for the Seattle Symphony Pops series I attend.

(Found this thread after first checking Otter, then Music, where a thread referred me here.)

I'm actually surprised he was only 68, because I first heard his name in association with The Sting, which is almost 40 years ago, now.

RIP

Re: Oscar-Winning Composer Marvin Hamlisch Dead at 68

"Showbiz 411 has confirmed with producer Jerry Weintraub that Hamlisch completed work on the score for Steven Soderbergh's currently shooting Liberace biopic "Behind The Candelabra," starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. “He finished it all,” Weintraub said. “I can’t believe what happened. He was a great guy.” As some folks may know, this isn't the first pairing between the composer and director, as Hamlisch also provided the music for "The Informant!," and we wonder if that's a clue for the tone Soderbergh is taking with this film. Either way, it's a fitting project for Hamlisch to have as his swan song, and it's just another reason 'Candelabra' is a movie we'll be keeping a firm eye on in 2013."

Very nice. I remember enjoying his work on The Informant!.
