The Dark Knight Rises (Nolan, 2012) — The Reviews Thread

Re: The Dark Knight Rises (Nolan, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
also one nitpick that has always bothered me about any Batman film. How they never show Batman w/o the mask but still having that face paint covering the section around the eyes. When he came out of the Bat I was kind of disappointed seeing how he didn't have that..you know..cuz he just came back from Gotham as Bats. Though...I did really like seeing Bale walk around a bit in his suit w/o the mask. That suit really does look good with or w/o the mask.
But then I thought, "This is just like in Batman Returns when he takes off the mask and he suddenly has no eye make up."
Normally I'd think it would look silly until I saw Nicolas Cage putting on eye make up, getting ready to fight crime in Kick-Ass.

You know, the Bat Razor would've come in handy in that fist fight with Bane. SHit, anything on his belt would've come in handy but noooooo, Bats has gotta fight like a young man. Some detective.

Actually, in Nolan's universe, Bruce is a pitiful detective. Sure he has a cool computer and did the zany bullet thing in TDK but for the most part he's a thug. John Blake on the other hand was a detective. Nolan basically split up Batman into two separate characters (which fits with the notion at the end of this movie that Batman isn't just one man). Basically it's as if the Batman we know from the comics is an amalgamtion of several different people who have worn the mask.

Thats true but, I don't think it would've taken a detective to realize he could've used some gas pellets or ninja stars. You know, some ninja shit Bruce was taught earlier. lol
Actually, now that I think about it, Nolan's Batman fights like Daredevil in this flick. All emotional and shit. Cool Daredevil film, shitty Batman film.

He did use gas pellets against Bane, but Bane already knew how to counter Batman's theatricality and deception points.

I recall him switching off the lights on Bane. Didn't recall the smoke bombs. I'm still surprised he didn't try those knockout darts he used against the guys escorting Gordon towards the ice. I'd be okay with Bane shrugging them off cos of the drugs in his system. I just didn't like Bruce not trying anything other than the rock 'em sock 'em approach. Made him look like a total idiot the second time around.

I guess it comes from years of comics that showed off Bruce as a calculating and strategic fighter. Didn't like seeing him trying to be an all out brawler.

The second time around we were supposed to believe he was magically a better fighter because now he feared death again.

Oh, I can fill that in too, it's just that the film doesn't do a very good job of expressing any difference between his two fights. Second time around, he seems to be doing much the same thing, only this time he clips the mask pipes.

Which came across more like a lucky break than an actual plan of attack. That clearly called out for a Batarang to the face.

While promoting "Cosmopolis," director David Cronenbeg was asked if he would ever consider directing a superhero film, considering that he's done such films as "The Fly" and "A History of Violence."
"A superhero movie, by definition, you know, it's comic book. It's for kids. It's adolescent in its core," he replied. "That has always been its appeal, and I think people who are saying 'The Dark Knight Rises' is supreme cinema art, I don't think they know what the fuck they're talking about."
Cronenberg went on to admit that he liked other Christopher Nolan movies, like "Memento," but found the Batman trilogy "boring." He recognized the films' technical brilliance, but added that they are "still Batman running around in a stupid cape."

Well, perhaps about the "boring" part. Despite my gripes with the third film, I was never bored.
By the way, what's your source on that?
