Martin Scorsese is switching to digital for good.

According to Thelma. I had to take a minute to process this. Thought the digital was just for Hugo and someone of his clout could still stick with film.

Wow, another nail in the film coffin. I honestly thought Scorsese would never permanently convert.

Re: Martin Scorsese is switching to digital for good.

Christopher Nolan has continued to be film's greatest champion over digital (paraphrasing what was said about Scorsese in that link) and he'll likely hold firm to that longer than anyone.

Re: Martin Scorsese is switching to digital for good.

Meh. Digital is there.

I held out on a smartphone, because they're clunky and the touchscreens can be a pain in the arse. But now I'm used to it an will never go back.

If you have the budget, or appreciate the appearance of heritage, you can stick with film. But the market is speaking and people are changing to digital.

I wish he'd switch to making good films again--it's been 15 years since the last one--and to another star besides Di Caprio!

Nolan is holding out...but the big as fuck nail...if not the thing to literally just throw the coffin in the ground, nails or no nails, is Spielberg. He still has his films edited on a moviola.

Re: Martin Scorsese is switching to digital for good.

I mentioned Nolan because he's always talking up the advantages film has over digital, always talking about how superior it is from a quality standpoint. He talks about it not so much as a businessman but as a genuine fan. I recall Quentin Tarantino singing film's praises during a roundtable interview discussing it with 3D/digital's champion, Jim Cameron. The other directors that were nominated back around the time of the Oscars for films released in 2009 were there but Tarantino and Cameron were the two opposing viewpoints.

Well, this sucks, but not as much as when Lynch said it.

Re: Martin Scorsese is switching to digital for good.

Might as well. The Scorsese that we all initially loved, the man who could make a throwaway masterpiece like The King of Comedy, is dead. I haven't been impressed by one of his films since Bringing Out the Dead.

What is the problem with everyone converting to digital? Celluloid was good, but it has served its purpose, just like vinyl, cassette, and discs.

Not anymore, Warhorse was edited on an avid. He also recently confirmed Lincoln will edited on an Avid as well.

Re: Martin Scorsese is switching to digital for good.

I just realized all of Scorsese's movies do not really provide anything new or worthy to the cinematic medium except for Taxi Driver, they're kind of all melt together as nervy angry dark escapades even though entertaining. Only with Taxi Driver he touched on the problem of lonelyness which no one's really thought of as a problem, ironic for the man who's been through so many marriages himself. I think it is a really good autobio of the man himself. It is a good antithesis of The Godfather.

Re: Martin Scorsese is switching to digital for good.

Well, there's a difference between shooting a film on film vs. exhibiting it digitally. I'm not opposed to digital taking over exhibitions, but I'd prefer if they still shot on film. But, digital is getting better as time goes on.

BTW, I think Paul Thomas Anderson will be another holdout.

He isn't even in the discussion.

Well, that's not a very nice thing to say.

Next you'll be saying Tobe Hooper doesn't matter either.

Yeah, that one really killed me. Especially because along with film Lynch decided to dump the discipline of editing.

Yeah but in that commercial he was talking about some film he had developed.

Re: Martin Scorsese is switching to digital for good.

I'd be upset about his switch to digital if his films were anywhere near the quality they used to be.
