Mr. Majestyk aka Charles Bronson, the melon farmer
In my little adventure to see more Bronson films from before the 80s, I've seen some pretty badass ones...you should really see Hard Times btw. Fucking great. Now I've seen this most recently...
Anyway...Mr. Majestyk. Fucking awesome. I can't say anything bad about it. I love his character. The intelligence he himself as a man has. His morals etc. Great hero. Really want to read the book by Leonard. Didn't know there was a book...and especially from Elmore Leonard.
Story pretty much is. Bronson is Mr. Majestyk, a melon farmer essentially. He's a stand up guy, stands up for the migrant workers, and don't take shit.
I REALLY REALLY loved the action in this film, it's not a lot of action but it's action w/ an impact. That damn chase w/ the Ford truck was awesome. Loved the shots they had on that chase. Classic 70s villains and whatnot. Much like Hard Times...I can't say anything bad about it. Really liked Bronson's character. He just felt like a real man that you could look up to.
Little note..I really dug the music too.
I can't wait to see my next Bronson film. I'm looking at Red Sun...that looks like a lot of fun just knowing Mifune was in there too.

I love Mr. Majestyk. It's not one of Bronson's best, but it's a pretty good (action? suspense?) flick.
Terrific villain by Al Lettieri. After this movie, Godfather, and The Getaway, he should've been a major star, but died too young.

Paul Koslo takes a wicked shot to the nuts via shotgun, IIRC.
I love Bronson getting all tense after the melon destruction... "A whole damn crop of watermelons..." (clenches fist tightly).
It's one of QT's favorite Bronson films. Someone can remind me which of his films prominently features the poster.
Snake, Red Sun is cool, but don't expect a great film. It's more like, "Hey, can you believe we got all these fucking amazing actors in one film?" more than anything. Still, watching Bronson, Mifune and Delon share the screen is bliss.

Elmore Leonard wrote MR. MAJESTYK as a screenplay first and then turned it into a novel. I run hot and cold on Leonard. MAJESTYK is kind of in the middle.
I do like the movie a lot, though. "Do you know who that is?" "Yeah, I've seen him on TV, he plays the accordion."
Re: RED SUN. This is the only film in which a member of the original SEVEN SAMURAI and a member of the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN remake cast appear onscreen together. And let's not forget that Delon once starred in a film called LE SAMOURAI. And Bronson was also in VERA CRUZ, a film with similarities to SEVEN SAMURAI that came out the same year as Kurosawa's film (1954). I like to put forth the argument that VERA CRUZ's influence extended to MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, MAJOR DUNDEE, A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, THE PROFESSIONALS and THE WILD BUNCH. See it and you'll see what I mean.

Yup. Great movie.
Was never a real fan of his at the time, but came to appreciate him later in life. It probably started with Great Escape, and then after than I actually started to seek his work out to specifically watch him.
James Coburn is another actor I didn't click with as a kid, but who I find enormously watchable now.
Another Bronson movie that is worth seeking out is Telefon. Don't go in expecting an action packed Majestyk-like thriller. It's more low key, and frankly, I liked that it bucks a lot of action movie cliches. IIRC, it ends without a big action sequence in the third act which I found absolutely refreshing.

Telefon is actually on my list after Red Sun. And after Telefon, Rider on The Rain is next which really intrigues me based off the premise.

One of my favorite Bronson movies. Have you seen Breakout yet? Unexpected mix of comedy in that one and is IMHO one of his best.
I recently got the German Blu ray for Mr. Majestyk (which is region free) and watched it the day I got it. The dialogue in this movie is just awesome.

Check THE FAMILY with Telly Savalas in a small role. Bronson plays a hit man.
To me like Clint Eastwood, Bruce Lee in the 70's it's the actor that makes those 70's movies worth watching not the movie.
