Ian Fleming biopic in the works

via Variety

"Source Code" helmer Duncan Jones has signed on to direct a biopic about James Bond author Ian Fleming, whose life was as exciting as the hero he created.

K5 Film's Oliver Simon and Daniel Baur, PalmStar Media Capital's Kevin Frakes and Liberty Films' Stuart Fenegan will produce the pic, with the working title "Fleming," in association with Jim Young of Animus Films and Robert Laycock of the Ian Fleming Estate.

K5, which is fully financing the pic with PalmStar, will handle worldwide sales rights via its K5 Intl.

Fleming served as a Naval intelligence officer for the Royal Navy in WWII, helping to mastermind secret operations around the world. His adventures inspired him to create 007.

"Fleming lived through one of the most perilous periods in world history, in a position that allowed him a unique vantage point of all the players, all the stakes," said Jones. "He witnessed true heroism first-hand. And he saw the evil men could do. Then, when the war ended, he went off to write fiction. The essential question for me is: Where did Ian Fleming end and Bond begin?"

Jones is currently casting the pic, based on the biography "Ian Fleming, the Man Behind James Bond," by Andrew Lycett.

It will go into production this year.

Jones is repped by CAA in the U.S. and Independent Talent Group in London.

Matt Brown penned the script. He is repped by CAA. CAA is also repping domestic distribution rights for the film.
Interesting. I've never read the book, anyone here read it? Is it pretty good? I'm a Fleming fan for sure now. I've known of his life but nothing in detail..so this could be good depending on how they go into it. It's Jones...so I'm sure it'll be at the very least interesting.

Fleming as a cool older guy:

I've JUST read Casino Royale and thought it was fucking great. Really wished they'd adapt the book into film that was much closer to the material cuz it'd be amazing. So cool and still thrilling. Yet very close to being real. Can't wait to read the next Bond book.

It never fails. Fassbender's name pops up around here for every possible role in every rumored film.

I find DVDTalk's hard on for him amusing.

With his current career arc, I think Fassbender would be slumming in a Highlander movie.

They should have Jonathan Rhys Myers as young Fleming, and Timothy Dalton as older Fleming.

To be honest I actually don't think Fassbender would be a bad choice for a Fleming film I just find it amusing that his name gets thrown around in these threads for every role that's announced lately.

I vote for Fassbender. If not him, then maybe Michael Sheen.

Re: Ian Fleming biopic (Dir: Duncan Jones

I've read Lycett's book, and rather enjoyed it. There are several facets of Fleming's life and career worth exploring, and I'm eager to see which parts get the emphasis and which are glossed over. His WWII service record has always existed in a sort of ambiguous state of mythology. It was an important role, certainly, and he ran with some very important circles (one of the founding documents of our intelligence service was a memorandum written by Fleming), but his involvement and role were certainly played up for the purpose of imbuing his thrillers with some mystique and credibility. He was a brainstorming guy, and unless new things have come to light per any Official Secrets Act expiration, it'll be very difficult to put his sitting at a desk spit balling into a movie and make it compelling.

He was, however, very much an active man from youth to death (he suffered his final heart attack on the golf course at age 56). He loved snorkeling and wildlife, which he wrote into the Bond novels. It's the one element that hasn't really been carried into the films, though I suppose that stuff is far more interesting in print than on screen where nature can be kind of lifeless and dull.

Personally, I just want to see him tearing around Jamaica in his Thunderbird with a mortified Noel Coward. That whole passage in the book was hilarious.

I loved those parts of the books where it just trails off into talking about nature too.

Considering the director, Duncan Jones, I can't help but wonder if this will be a straightforward bio-pic or maybe something more whimsical incorporating the man and the myth and the Bond mythos. Something where he sleeps at night and dreams his stories or something. Like Adventures of Barron Munchausen.

Re: Ian Fleming biopic (Dir: Duncan Jones

With the BBC airing a mini series event on Fleming starting tonight, I found this thread. Jones dropped out in November of last year. I thought this was the same project? If anyone is interested in the BBC mini series I started a thread in the TV forum here:

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/tv-talk/617...ic-cooper.html

With Legendary’s “Warcraft” starting production early next year, director Duncan Jones has been forced to part ways with “Fleming,” the upcoming biopic of James Bond creator Ian Fleming, TheWrap has learned.

Jones was keen to direct “Fleming” but scheduling became an insurmountable obstacle, as the producers were unwilling to wait nearly two years for him to finish “Warcraft,” which Universal will release on Dec. 18, 2015.

“Warcraft” is an adaptation of the popular video game “World of Warcraft,” and the big-budget tentpole calls for a long post-production process. Travis Fimmel and Paula Patton are expected to star.

“Fleming” is based on Andrew Lycett’s biography of Ian Fleming, and the film is expected to explore the author’s life as a true international spy, which helped informed his James Bond books.

K5 International’s Oliver Simon and Daniel Baur are producing “Fleming” with PalmStar Media Capital’s Kevin Frakes and Liberty Films’ Stuart Fenegan, as well as Jim Young and Robert Laycock of the Ian Fleming estate.

Producers are currently searching for a new director who can hit the ground running and start casting next year.

Jones, who previously directed the Sam Rockwell sci-fi movie “Moon” and the Jake Gyllenhaal thriller “Source Code,” is represented by CAA and Independent Talent Group.

Re: Ian Fleming biopic in the works

There was a Fleming biopic on TNT way back in 1990: Spymaker: The Secret Life of Ian Fleming, starring Jason Connery (Sean's son). Don't remember much about it, except that it wasn't as sexy/clumsy as the poster over at IMDB. It's on DVD from Warner Archive.
