Re: Movies you like that everyone around you hates
I rewatched this on Netflix a couple of days ago and it really is quite good. I group this along with Death to Smoochy as really good dark cynical comedies that suffered with mass audiences for being too cynical, but they are both quite good.

The Blair Witch Project is the only horror/scary movie that has ever actually "scared" me. Most of the time they are so clearly movies that even if they have scary moments, I know it's actors and corn syrup. Blair Witch's gimmick was enough to make me drop that feeling a bit.

It's not that people were too cynical. It's that those are really bad movies. Jim Carrey's character in Cable Guy just wasn't funny. And Death To Smoochy. I could barely make it through that one. I was told it was a great comedy, but I just don't see how people can say that.

I wasn't a big fan, but my friend Jake is right there with you. From his top 100 films list:

His pixellated abstract captures existential cop tropes at their most stripped-down and minimal. Through Mann's quietly haunting lens, the ocean represents not the promise of escape from the entrapment of the cop-criminal dialectic that separates Crockett and Gong Li's Isabella but the futility of such hope. This is a film where the pink spray of blood from a headshot is not presented as a cool bit of action but as a spirit leaving a body. This movie only ever gets more chilling and moving with each watch.

The American starring George Clooney. Love the fact that it magnificently captures the themes of "Le Samourai", it is set in Italy with fantastic cinematography, and is a great antithesis to the quick-edited, hand-held shot action films that are currently popular.

As for Carrey in Cable Guy, I don't think the point was for him to be Ace Ventura funny. His character is downright scary in Cable Guy, which is a "too much TV is bad for you" comedy-horror film.
Death to Smoochy is hysterical just on its premise alone (children's programming being controlled by and run as organized crime), but again, I think it was a bit too cynical. People don't want to think about Barney being controlled by the mafia and such.
Both films really take their shots at the TV viewing masses.

Very Bad Things
The blackest of black comedies, but if you look at it, one could call it: Karma: The Movie. This features Cameron Diaz's and Christian Slater's best performances.
