If I want anyone to be in a film that participates in and deconstructs a genre at the same time, it would be Cage. He is perfect for those endeavors because in a straight film he always seems to be acting above or beyond the script. With Kick-Ass it was the best marriage between a film's tone and Cage's style since Face/Off.

Oh god. :sarcasm: Cage brought down the whole fucking movie and ruined the tragic element of the big Daddy character. Cage is no kind of method performer. He's a waste of skin for the most part and he's a herpes on most films. I would have loved to see a more tragic bent on Big Daddy like in the graphic novel aside from the goofy Adam West nonsense Cage pulled off. Awful performance, which is par for the course with Cage. The movie deconstructed nothing. It pretended to mock superhero movies and then embraces its absurdity by turning it in to another dumb superhero movie.

I think you like the comic book a little too much and probably should just stick with that.

They are different mediums! If you're that into fidelity to the source, then stick with motion comics and Sin City adaptations.

He didn't ruin the tragic element at all. Cage's goofy take on the role elevated the tragic element as he felt like a real dad who happened to also be a vigilante. Taking the edge off that character was essential to making Big Daddy and Hit Girl feel like a dynamic father-daughter and not just the dynamic duo.

No way. The comic book was barely better than the movie.

What about Watchmen? That was very faithful to its source material. 300? Very faithful.

Disagree 100 percent.

And they both were pretty bad or terrible movies.

300 to a much greater degree than Watchmen since thankfully Watchmen had better dialogue.

I'll take either of them over Kick Ass anyday.

I liked both the comic and movie versions of Kick-Ass, but preferred the comic

Yea. But people don't care about comics. And a lot of people don't really care about movies. If the movie was only viewed by people who read the comic, it would have bombed.

Also, Cage was good in Kick Ass. Nobody else could have died with that kind of acting.

Uh-oh, I love Watchmen, 300 AND Kick-Ass.

And Cage ruled in Kick-Ass. I totally believed him as both a dad and a killer.

Watchmen was awful.
300 was forgettable.
Kick-Ass was awesome.

I liked them all also but love Kick-Ass the most. And I'll jump on the Nicolas Cage Kick-Ass lovefest. His performance reminds of a middle aged fanboy who is thrilled at being a Superhero, so much so he does that Adam West voice while in costume. It's a very deranged performance but all fanboys are slightly deranged. That being said, I don't have much hope for part two.

P.S.-"Now switch to KRYPTONIIIIITTTEEE!!!"

Kickass 2 seems to be in the right direction. More on Hitgirl and the supporting players and less on Kick ass himself.

Hitgirl needs her own movie, and Jim Carrey's Stallone is funny.

I've never read a Mark Millar comic I've liked, I don't know, maybe it's me.

The rocket pack was stupid, the changes to Big Daddy stunk, Nic Cage was miscast and brought down the movie, the obligatory happy ending was moronic. The only stroke of genius was Moretz as Hit Girl.

I didn't much like the comic, but at least it had the courage of its convictions to be properly downbeat (The way the book handles the Katie subplot) and nihilistic. I liked the movie in the sense that it was well-made and I found it funny in places, but it's the ultimate in post-modern smirking. People getting hit by cars? Little girls swearing? Hee-hee, it's hilarious! Nothing needs to be taken seriously, lets treat everything like it's a big, giant joke, including death and violence. It was sort of like Watchmen without a point. Whereas Moore actually had things worth saying about the human condition, social and political themes, and comics themselves, Kick-Ass just feels like an excuse to wallow in irony violence.

Watchmen was, 300 not as much because they had to pad it out. But I think Snyder hit all of the notes of Watchmen and missed the music, I think that many of the mature themes and stuff just went over his head. I think it's part of the fundamental problem: at least Kick-Ass had some mainstream appeal, Watchmen was so much a part of its source material, which is so hugely important, that I think if you didn't know about that, most of the movie probably wouldn't mean much to you. Then again, maybe Watchmen is dated, adolescent nonsense and I'm just not mature enough to know that yet. I've had plenty of people say such about the man, and the older I get, the more I worry that might be partially true. Ah, well. Fiction, and all of that.

Yes, because Nicholas Cage and Jim Carrey need more reasons to act neurotic :p.

They don't need any more reasons but when they have a good role/reason, they do good.

I forgot about that part. I hated the rocket pack too. But everything else was better although I'm torn between which origin of Big Daddy and Hit Girl I like better. In the comic the dialogue is pretty lazy at times and other times tries too hard to be over the top.

Anyways, the score, soundtrack, action, acting, and story were all excellent in the film.

Major plot spoiler there, also a big change from the comic.

Spoiler:
They spoil the death of Dave's dad and it appears Col. Stars obviously still gets killed, but they don't cut his head off and replace it with that of his dog's, which was one of the creepiest images in the comic.

Re: Kick-Ass 2 happening?

While I still have my doubts if this will even be a good film, what I have discovered is that I no longer have respect for Jim Carrey.

Sandy Hook is a tragic event, but that's the "game changer" in people's minds? Were past school shootings like Columbine and Virginia Tech not worthy enough to start railing against violent entertainment? Yes, I get the victims' ages were dramatically different between Sandy Hook and Columbine. The problem doesn't lie with violence, it lies with our country's piss-poor attitude on mental health.

However, that's more of a thread for Political Talk. ;)

Re: Kick-Ass 2 happening?

I fully support Jim in this. I mean, no children have ever been killed before in history, so it clearly took a major event like that to get him to see what he's promoting would be tantamount to killing a child himself.

Good for you, Jim!

Deftones 06-23-13 07:11 PM

Re: Kick-Ass 2 happening?

Just shut up, Jim. If you had a decent movie within the past decade or two I might be more upset with his comments.

Jackskeleton 06-23-13 07:53 PM

Re: Kick-Ass 2 happening?

Well, Eternal Sunshine on a spotless mind was less than a decade ago.

But that may label me as a hipster or something. Either way, Jim'S stance on this is pretty silly. Is Sandy Hook even very relevant anymore?
