Has there been a single 80s movie remake better than the original?

Maybe it's because you always like the movies you saw as a kid more but has anyone found an 80s remake they liked more than the original? The ones I've seen have ranged from mediocre - The Thing, Nightmare on Elm Street - to just horrible like Clash Of the Titans or A-Team which i found a smug bore. Fright Night was ok but even that didn't make me think wow, they've really improved this. None of the movies seem necessary, only meant to cash in on nostalgia.

Is it just me? Does anyone who didn't see these movies in their first version think the new ones are better?

I was a kid prior to the 80s, so my choice would be the Dawn of the Dead remake. '78 vs 2004

Dawn 04 better than Dawn 78? NooooOoOOooOOooOooOoo!

If you're going 70s, The Hills Have Eyes remake is better than the original.

While I still like Burton's Batman, Batman Begins is much better.

I liked 80s remake of The Thing better than the 50s original. So, yeah.

Note I didn't ask if there had ANY remake better than the original, because there's many over the years that have been. I'm speaking strictly of the trend of remaking 80s flicks for today's kids.

I'll look past the Op's logic on that one and just say that I absolutely loved the A-Team movie! A great movie by no means but I had a hell of a lot of fun watching it.

I think the recent remake of Clash of the Titans was better than the 1981 original, which, even as a kid, I found severly disappointing.

Agreed, I'd also like to add the 80s version of The Fly by Cronenberg was better than the original.

^^^ I agree with both, but that's not the topic.

We are approximately as far away from the 70s-80s as Hammer was when they started remaking the 30s-40s Universal monster movies in the 50s-60s. We're just getting old and it's time to let the kids play in the sandbox. If we're alive, we can make fun of them whining over remakes of Transformers and Harry Potter.

Yeah, as much as I love Harryhausen, the original Clash of the Titans is not a good movie. I enjoyed it as a kid (and now as an adult) because of the effects work rather than the film itself.

Saying Dawn of the Dead 2004 is better that 1978 is fighting words!

I've been thinking a lot about his lately....funny, back in 2000-2001...which I don't consider that long ago....I thought the late 80's still didn't feel that old....now 11-12 years later, they feel very old.

Rival11's side note: on the plus side I feel much healthier now then I did 10 years ago.

Re: Has there been a single 80s movie remake better than the original?

I also thought Batman Begins was better than Tim Burton's Batman.

A-Team wasn't a movie in the 80s, but if we're going that route I never really cared for 21 Jump Street but enjoyed the hell out of the movie.

I thought Fright Night was an improvement as well.

I didn't mind the new Karate Kid but the original is better, Friday the 13th was a shitty movie to begin with and the reboot was no better, A Nightmare on Elm Street remake was fucking horrible. I did enjoy the campy 3D remake of My Bloody Valentine.

Nolan's Batman over Burton is a good one.

I'd consider Karate Kid a contender if they didn't basically work off the same script. Edge goes to the original.

Never saw the original Fright Night, but I loved the recent one.
