The Rainer Werner Fassbinder appreciation thread
Appreciate, motherfuckers!
For those of you who don't know him:
He was part of new wave of directors in Germany aka New German Cinema. Herzog and Wenders for example came out of that. Anyway....he was a fucking great one that died too young. Study him, I still am amazed by his power in direction. Crazy fuck was great. We really need Criterion to get more of his stuff and of course...get it on BD.
really like this image btw...

Fox Lorber released a bunch of his movies on DVD awhile back and they subsequently went out of print. I don't know who has the rights now.
Also, I don't think I've ever seen one of his movies.

I've only seen the Criterion ones.
Also my introduction to him was from Berlin Alexanderplatz. Hell of an introduction to him.

I have seen and own the following :
The Merchant of Four Seasons
The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
Fox and His Friends
Mother Küsters Goes to Heaven
Fear of Fear
Chinese Roulette
In a Year of Thirteen Moons
The Marriage of Maria Braun
Lola
Veronika Voss
I would highly recommend all of them. Fassbinder knew how to capture the humanity of his characters like no one else. Especially the ones that were considered society's rejects.

Big fan here. Of those I have seen, the bleak, mortifying Why Does Herr R. Run Amok? remains my favourite, with the unnerving telefilm Fear of Fear running a close second.

Haven't seen that many yet. Ali's my favorite, so far.

His movies are great. His life's pace (erm, utilitarian drug use) was too much for anyone to handle.

Re: The Rainer Werner Fassbinder appreciation thread
I find his body of work to be daunting. There's just so many films. Tarkovsky and Kubrick worked their whole lives to make 7 and 13 films respectivly, this guy made like 35 films in 15 years.
I've seen like 5 of them. He just feels like a lot of work to get into because there's so much there and so much of it is hard to see.

I remember seeing ALI: FEAR EATS THE SOUL on a double bill with Douglas Sirk's ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS (1955), the film that inspired it. It's quite funny in parts, if you've just seen the earlier film, e.g. the scene where the woman's son (played by Fassbinder, I think) kicks the TV set. I was with a film school friend for the double bill (about 35 or 36 years ago), and I started to nod off during ALI and my friend had to nudge me to keep me from snoring.

I'm a big fan of Fassbinder and own over 20 of his films on DVD (and one Blu-ray).
My favorites are:
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
The Merchant of Four Seasons
The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant
Fox and His Friends
A few of his early films don't do much for me...but overall, he was an amazing talent that burned white hot for around a decade.

But I also love films from his earlier & later phases especially In a Year of Thirteen Moons.

Saw his last film Querelle. Not too crazy about it but it was still interesting.
Seems like he was moving in a different direction from his other films (shot in scope and english).
Who knows what could have been.

I love Querelle. To me it embodies everything that Fassbinder was about. Not his best film, but my favorite film of his.

German directors: they will wow you with their art, and then murder you with a significant bullet if you get all mushy about it.

I've seen a ton of his films, and while I love many of them, Katzelmacher remains my favorite. It's not for everyone, but something about it really affected me. Fox and His Friends is also a favorite.
