Was that the Rose McGowan version?

Didn't think of that, but if RR was going to direct, I guess...

Re: John Carter (2012, Director: Stanton, Star: Kitsch) -- The Reviews Thread

I give it 3 stars. It wasn't anything special, and really slow for me during the first 1/3 or 1/2 of the movie and didn't get particularly interesting until the end. Even then, I never found that it presented an epic story and scope that I expected it to. I think what made it difficult for me as well was is all the alien names, as I couldn't understand who or what they were talking about most of the time. Maybe that was just me.

Did love the bits of humor and the large monster dog thing. I'm a sucker for a happy animal.

Is Sola any more strange than Solo? Thark than Tarkin? Woola and Wicket? Dejah and Dooku?

Sola and Dejah were the only names I could make out easily. Looking at the cast listing I wouldn't be able to say who was who for the most part if you just said the character name. Dejah Thoris, Tas Tarkas, Tal Hajus, Matai Shang, Tardos Mors, Sab Than, Kantos Kan, Sarkoja. Not to mention Thark, Jeddark, Zodanga, Therns, and whatever.

Now that you mention it, a lot of the John Carter names are surprisingly similar to Star Wars... I think Lucas should give these books some more credit: Tarkas/Tarkin, Banth/Bantha, Jeddak/Jedi, Woola/Wookie, Sola (actually, the name of Padmé's sister who was cut from Episode II)...

Wow, didn't notice that. always thought Lucas just got most of his ideas from Dune.

James Cameron take note: steal your ideas from dead people who can't sue.

I almost posted Woola/Wookie earlier but changed it since Wookie wasn't a character name.

I give it a 'C'.
Actors were so-so.
I thought Taylor Kitsch is too much a pretty boy to play JOHN CARTER.
Needed a more grizzle actor to play such a world-weary character.
Never once believe he was a Civil War Vet.
Overall plot was a bore.
I just wasn't able to get into the setting or the story.

It was ok, don't care if I ever see it again. I thought the lead was James Franco at times. He was very miscast.

The average Civil War soldier was under 21, Kitsch is 31, plenty old enough to be a "world-weary character" for the times. He is a pretty boy though.

Re: John Carter (2012, Director: Stanton, Star: Kitsch) -- The Reviews Thread

alright...so I saw this Thursday. After being taken to see Project X...I couldn't handle the film after the first 15 minutes...so I left my friend in there and hope to never see a movie w/ her again. Good thing she paid for it. Anyway...got a ticket for John Carter. Fucking loved it.

I loved everything about it. It just felt like a classic. I had no issue w/ it's pacing. If ANYTHING could be said on my part that may have been a flaw was that it was a lot of stuff being done by Carter but it sure as hell didn't bother me. I was very impressed by it. If felt exotic and had a nice level of wonderment that I don't see very often. I just loved it so fucking much. I don't think we'll get Ghost of Mars but damnit...I want more John Carter.

For readers of the book...how close was it to the source material?

Re: John Carter (2012, Director: Stanton, Star: Kitsch) -- The Reviews Thread

Had a very good time at the movie.

SFX were natural and made me forget they were there at times. Having 9 foot green guys with 4 arms is hard to pull off, this movie could not have been done 20 years ago.

Plenty of "mild" humor in the movie: Learn how to walk/jump in a liter gravity planet, little looks JC gave, Virginia...

Like that the changed the way he gets to Mars, just falling asleep in a cave will not cut it today. The movie gave it more of a Sci-fi way to get there.

Same changes were OK, did not mess with the theme of the book at all. Some of the deletions left out story lines, but no book has ever made it fully to the Silver Screen.

Wish the movie would have done better so we could see further installments.

The movie trailer excited me to see it, but I already knew the story and knew what to except. Those who knew nothing of JC were at a real disadvantage and there was almost nothing that could be done about it.

Maybe a release date in late July or early Aug would have helped the Box Office totals?

Anyway, not Star Wars type awesome movie, but I enjoyed watching one of childhood heroes jump around the screen, and the "9 foot green four armed aliens" were much better than I thought could be/would be.

For those who liked this movie, it's best sequences never even came close to equaling the greatness of what is below:

^ "FLASH! ... Gordon!!"

actually I think if Brian Blessed had been in 'John Carter' it might have worked better ... and The Darkness doing the film's soundtrack.

"Flying blind on a rocket cycle?!"

"That must be one hell of a planet you men come from!"

Brian Blessed alone is about half the awesomeness of that movie.

Fairly close. Here are some differences I can recall from the book:
Spoiler:
- John Carter was not running from the law. He was prospecting for gold with a partner when the indians attacked.

- The Holy Therns and their teleporting devices were not in the first book. John heard strange noises in the cave, then he found himself naked and looking down at his paralyzed body. He goes outside and looks at the sky. Mars is clearly visible and he finds himself pulled toward it.

- The entire story is told in first person from John's perspective, so the stuff with Dejah Thoris and her father in Helium and discovering how to harness the ninth ray energy was not in the book.

- The Tharks were far more brutal in the book. They were the ones who shot down Dejah's airship, not the Zodangans. John didn't rush in to save her, either -- he just observed the confrontation from afar as the Tharks took her prisoner and scavaged the ship for supplies.

- There are several other differences -- mainly the arena fight. John was pitted against other warriors in a last man standing death match. One of these men was an ally of the princess. He convinced John to pretend he had killed him so they could escape together and find her. There was something similar to this in the film, where James Purefoy's character tells John to take him prisoner. I suppose the circumstances are different in the film because they wanted a big spectacle with giant creatures. There was a white ape attack in the book, but it happened in the Thark city very early in the story

- Tal Hajus (the evil Thark voiced by Thomas Hayden Church) was behind the death of Sola's mother and Tars Tarkas's love. It was a big deal in the book that Tars wanted revenge on this guy, but in the film John just cuts off his head. The concept of love and family was considered a weakness to the Tharks. All the eggs were taken to an incubator and the children were raised by random caregivers. Tars was the first Thark to hide an egg from the community because he wanted to protect his actual daughter. I'm not sure how much of this came across in the film, but it was decent drama that I think would have worked well had they presented it better.

- IIRC, Dejah was not forced to marry anyone, but chose to do it for the good of her planet after she thought John was dead. When he returns, she still refuses him. Apparently a promise of marriage can only be broken by death on Barsoom. As I recall, the Zodangan prince was not an outright villain in the book. Nevertheless, he had to be dispatched so our hero could get the girl.

- There was an entire climax where John attempts to restore power to the planet's oxygen factory that was removed.

- And perhaps the biggest change/loss: Dejah was pretty much naked throughout the entire book.

Saw this today, and I enjoyed it, but during the beginning I thought it took a while to get the show moving.

I kept on getting distracted by the two actors who played Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony in the TV show "Rome", walking around in Roman garb on Mars.

Rome:

Normally I wait for movies to go to DVD before watching them, so I am a few months behind. For John Carter, I saw it at the drive-in this weekend, it was with The Avengers.

Loved The Avengers.

They paired John Carter with The Avengers? Sheesh, I didn't know it was still playing anywhere anymore.
