Re: John Carter (2012, Director: Stanton, Star: Kitsch) -- The Reviews Thread
This movie is a success despite of its components: two leads that lacked charisma, creature design that was a bit too Disney, and slightly uneven pacing. There was also something that seemed off about a lot of the set design on Earth. I couldn't put my hand on it, but it seemed less real and more like what you'd find at a store that sells things that are supposed to look old. The colors were also a bit off on Earth (like in Superman Returns).
The use of 3D was understated, which I was very happy about.
Despite all this, it was a really fun and entertaining movie.

The box-office take has a different opinion.
I don't see how anybody could say Collins gave a good performance. Her accent was English despite her not being such and for no apparent reason, and her lines were about as melodramatic as they could be for a female character.
While I don't know if it was in the books, the ending was very reminiscent of the early 80s Flash Gordon. This could have greatly benefited from a similar soundtrack as well.

4/5 stars for me. Went and saw this with the family and we all enjoyed it. I thought the leads were fine and only had issues with the pacing. Just when I thought the pedal was going to hit the medal....it didn't. Really liked how they tied Edgar Rice Burroughs into it. I'd like to see more movies in this series but the box office isn't looking good for that. Went to a one o clock showing and it was a little more than half full.

Wouldn't it have been awesome if a fleet of Hawkmen just showed up and started kicking some Zodangan ass?

I loved it. It kind of felt like what the Star Wars prequels should have been. The two leads weren't fantastic, but they were good enough to not detract from the other elements, which all worked for me.

So much more fun than typical blockbusters. This has a brain. Great art direction and thought the two leads did fantastic.
Audience applauded at the end.

When she is first introduced in the city and spouting off about not wanting to get married, saving the city, I need to study this machine, etc. I will give you the melodramatic. Once she is paired up with Kitsch and has someone to bounce off of, she did fine. I thought they had decent chemistry.

You mean our hero riding a one-man flying machine into the middle of enemy territory to save his beloved from marrying the villain? Yeah, that was right out of the book -- but I made the Flash Gordon connection myself.
Wouldn't it have been awesome if a fleet of Hawkmen just showed up and started kicking some Zodangan ass?
I've read a couple reviews that singled that aspect out as a lame gimmick, but it's actually taken directly from the book.

I liked the score, it had a very classic Hollywood feel to it. Some of the shots back on Earth also reminded me of John Ford.

^ I have to say, the shots on Earth were very well done. While they couldn't really do it this time, I would be up for a Western done by this film team, if they can recover from the disaster this movie is going to prove.

I liked the movie a lot. The initial impression leaving the theater was that it was solid, but the more I think about it the more I liked it. It had a really good sense of humor, the action was well done, and I liked the characters a lot. I'd love a sequel, too bad that'll never happen.

off wikipedia, dated March 8th....sourced from an article from....The Hollywood Reporter.
Producers Jim Morris and Lindsey Collins are working on a sequel to John Carter based on the second Burroughs' novel The Gods of Mars; the working title for this sequel is John Carter: The Gods of Mars

This was better than I thought it would be. ***1/2 out of five.
Nice cast.
I could stare at the Princess of Mars all day long.
My only problem w/ it were a few slow spots that made it drag a little bit.
My dad really liked it, and he knew nothing about the story going in.

Despite being post-converted, I thought the 3D was pretty good. However, the movie looked really soft in IMAX. Not sure if this was due to the process they use to prep a film for IMAX, or if it's just the way it was shot.

Thanks, glad I passed on the IMAX 3-D showing that started fifteen minutes earlier than the one we caught.
I thought Stanton did a really good job w/ his first live-action flick, particularly considering the source material.
Now I am interested in reading the books. Wonder how much they bastardized the first one.

I just started Princess of Mars and am about 1/3rd of the way through and the movie pretty much follows it beat for beat.

Re: John Carter (2012, Director: Stanton, Star: Kitsch) -- The Reviews Thread
I wonder if Lynn Collins is secretly glad they didn't go with the book's original title of "Princess of Mars" as they originally intended (back in the days when Robert Rodriguez was attached)? Not that she was the main star, but being the title character of an epic bomb wouldn't seem easy in Hollywood.
