Academy Awards 2012: Picks and Discussion Thread

Definitely one of the most lackluster years in recent memory, but here are my picks. Most of the pundits expect The Artist to dominate. I have it winning 5, but it will probably end up with more than that. But for the sake of surprise, I do hope The Descendants shakes things up.

Picture: The Artist
Director: Michel Hazanavicius
Actor: George Clooney
Actress: Viola Davis
Supp. Actor: Christopher Plummer
Supp. Actress: Octavia Spencer
Original Screenplay: Midnight in Paris
Adapted Screenplay: The Descendants
Art Direction: Hugo
Cinematography: The Tree of Life
Costumes: The Artist
Foreign: A Separation
Sound Mixing: Hugo
Sound Editing: Hugo
Doc Feature: Paradise Lost
Doc Short: Saving Face
Animated Feature: Rango
Animated Short: Flying Books
Live Action: The Shore
Special Effects: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Film Editing: The Artist
Score: The Artist
Song: The Muppets
Makeup: Albert Nobbs
Yep, I'm sticking with Clooney. I think his star power will push him to the top, and this would give The Descendants 2 major wins and avoid a full Artist sweep. Some of the tech categories are tricky. I could see The Artist or Hugo taking Cinematography. Editing could also go to a number of films, but with The Artist as the BP front runner, I think they'll give it Editing. I wouldn't be shocked if The Artist took Original Screenplay.

This might be the first year that I'm totally disinterested in who wins what. I'll watch, but I just don't really care all that much. It doesn't feel exciting. As long as Plummer or von Sydow walk away with a statue, I'm good.
