Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013

A sequel to the horror hit Insidious is in the works, with Leigh Whannell returning to write the script and James Wan in talks to once again direct.* Jason Blum will produce through Blumhouse Productions and Brian Kavanaugh Jones, Oren Peli and Steven Schneider will be exec producers. Alliance Films is back as financier, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and Peter Schlessel’s FilmDistrict acquired U.S. rights.* FilmDistrict will distribute the film in the U.S.

The sequel news is hardly a shock, it is simply what happens when a $1.5 million budget horror film scares up nearly $100 million in worldwide grosses to become one of the most profitable films in recent memory. Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne starred in the first installment, as parents of a demonically possessed kid. SPWA bought it at 2010 Toronto and FilmDistrict released it. Alliance will distribute the sequel in Canada, the UK (via its Momentum Pictures subsidiary) and Spain (via Aurum). SPWA has the rest of the world. Production begins this year and will be released in 2013. Wan and Whannel hatched the Saw franchise.

“Insidious was the most fun project I’ve ever worked on,” Whannell said in a statement.* “From start to finish it was an absolute joy—from the writing of the screenplay, all the way to the first screening of the film at the Toronto film festival. *I believe that James Wan and I achieved what we set out to do—create a horror film for horror fans…Both of us feel that we can mine more terror from the world we created and know that if we assemble every member of the original team, we will have an amazing continuation of the story for fans of the first film.” Wan and Whannell are repped by Paradigm and attorney David Fox.

I enjoyed the first film until the end of the second act when the film decided to shift gears into becoming a piss poor comedy. If the sequel is more like the first half of the original and less like the second half, I'm game.

Glad James Wan is back. I loved the first one, just as you did. My only criticism is the very end of the movie. Either way, looking forward to the sequel.

Good news - the first really grew on me after a while - I am a huge Wan fan as well.....he just makes damn fun movies (death sentence, dead silence) - very happy he is returning to direct.

I loved Insidious. Yes, all the way through. Although I think they could've redesigned the main demon so he didn't look so much like a certain Sith. I don't think it needs a sequel, but I'm game to watch one.

Agreed on all counts.

The first one had a tag line "insidious is insidious".
Is this one "Insidious 2 is Insidiouser"

The first one was surprisingly really good. One of the best horror movies I've seen in a long time. I guess I don't think a sequel is really needed but it's basically inevitable these days for a movie to not have one unless it's a complete flop. I'll probably check it out eventually.

"I can say that yes, my character will be seen in Insidious 2," said Whannell. "It may probably bum a lot of people out, though, to hear this news. It's part of the reason I don't even read the internet message boards anymore; there was this hatred that spewed out from fans saying 'I hated those guys! They sucked! They ruined the movie!' so there will probably be a lot of people out there who will be disappointed to hear that the Specs and Tucker characters will be coming back. (laughs)"

I don't know why I always mix up James Wan and James Gunn.

House of the Devil's Jocelin Donahue joined the cast to play a younger version of Barbara Hershey's character.

First one was very good, although the demon was kind of silly looking.

Looks good to me.

I really enjoyed the trip through a haunted house atmosphere the first one had. I am looking forward to more.

Looks like this one has a higher budget, and I have to imagine the two leads are getting their piece of the pie this time.

And by higher, maybe 3-5 million as opposed to the 1.5 million the first one cost to make.

If that.
