Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013
First - I'm glad that I watched the first one before heading out to see Chapter 2 ... a lot of references/events in this one are direct callbacks to events in the first.
That said...I didn't find this one to be as spooky as the first. It was like everything I was seeing in this one was just like I saw before ... My biggest issue was all of the Spoiler:
Also, the comic relief killed some of the suspense (especially the poor-man's Galifinakis (sp?)) Maybe it was done to break tension and then pop you with a jump scare, but some of the attempted humor came off phony. After all, these guys are supposed to be ghost hunters and certainly have seen shit that would turn you white .. so why the jokes and general goofiness? (again, unless it was how they kept themselves from going insane from the horrors). Amazingly, the theater I was in was mostly quiet - no talking back to the screen (must have been a result of the 12:40pm showtime). A few screams here and there. 3/5 Average .. not Wan's best .. PS ... Anyone else think the Wan could/should be handling the Poltergeist remake? These films seem very much like that one. (Especially how when they yell in The Further it echoes, ala Poltergeist) |

About 30 people in my theater, not A PEEP during both, except when
Spoiler:
Poor-man's Galafinakis, so THAT'S why he looked familiar  Patrick Wilson in two ghost story movies back to back. |

I think the first one is pretty much required to see the second.

I loved that they made the Bride in Black

I didn't have any issue with the Spoiler:
Here's my review. |
Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013
I made the mistake of seeing the 10:30 showing. The rather large theater was sold out with teens. Before the movie started, the theater manager and a police officer had to announce that they had a few "incidents" at earlier showings and that they now have a zero tolerance policy in regards to cell phone usage, yelling, food throwing, and general things that dumb teens do at a movie theater instead of you know, watching the movie. They even had a police officer stay in the theater for the entire movie. I think I saw him escort about 2-3 kids out for being assholes.
Good movie. I enjoyed it, although I grew a bit restless towards the end. |
Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013
I've only ever had that happen once, before a showing of Accepted which made me realize I was too old to be watching Accepted.

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013
I thought it got a little convoluted toward the end, but that's my only complaint. Still very well made and a lot of fun. The audience was going berserk too, which makes horror movies more fun...at least for me.
I hope they do a 3rd chapter.

Even with a steep drop next weekend, it should crush the box office total of the original.
Maybe Leigh can make his directorial debut with chapter 3, after Cooties is released. Here's hoping. |

I liked the film and was entertained. Loved the shots of the house. I was waiting for Sid Haig or Beverly Washburn to come running out the front door. :) |

Spoiler:
WTF? Pretty weak movie overall, but I can't say I hated it. |
Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013
I didn't hate this, but it was undeniably stuck up its own ass for almost the entire running time.
The plot is so muddled and unfocused, with characters seemingly belonging to two different films. Once the bifurcated storylines come together, things don't get any better. The ADR in the opening was totally distracting. We can get that the young lady is Lin Shaye's character, having her overdub the actress playing her was... odd. There were zero scares here, too. I can't think of a single moment of faux tension that amounted to anything. There were some ideas within the film I found interesting (I like "the further" concept and enjoyed spending time in that place), but this was so unfocused in comparison to the first film, which only looks stronger now. I hope Ch. 3 reigns things in and ends this now-franchise on a high note. |

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013
I don't know if it was watching both back-to-back and there being so much continuity almost as if it was a four-hour story, but I really really enjoyed the "experience."
Had never seen 1. |
Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013
I liked this but it wasn't as scary as the first. I know, a sequel not being scary as the first is a novel opinion but it was almost as if this movie wasn't too concerned with scares. It was much more concerned with exploring The Further and how it's not just a world for the dead but also a time travel machine. It was weird but I did like it. Even though it wasn't as scary, it didn't feel lazy which almost seems contradictory but there you have it.

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013
So what you're saying is it was more of a supernatural drama than a horror movie?

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013
Finally saw this and sadly, I hated it. I'm such a huge fan of the first. I thought it was one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. But "Chapter 2" was just terrible on every level. The story, the script, the acting. It wasn't scary. It wasn't creepy. It wasn't fun. With the original team back from the first film, what the hell happened?

Re: Insidious 2 (Dir: James Wan) - TBD 2013
I missed it in theaters but just finished watching it - I redboxed it (I'm not paying no $22.99 on Amazon) and thought it was average. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great like the first one. The first one made it on my Top-3 list of that year. I agree with Chapter 2 being a bit more "supernatrual-ish" as opposed to full on horror like the first one was. Chapter 2 also has lots of things going on instead of focusing on just ONE thing like the first. You get a bunch of origin tales about the good guys and the bad guys that it feels a tad bloated. Maybe an extra 5-10 minutes could have helped?
I will say that the ending rocked, though. Granted, you have to have a keen ear and memory to get the reference. Spoiler:
