Re: X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014, Singer)

Pretty excited for this one. I watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: First Class on Saturday in preparation. Still need to watch the original three films plus The Wolverine. I have to say I don't quite get the hate for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, there's some parts in it that I dislike, what they did to Deadpool being the biggest disgrace, but overall it's a fairly entertaining film I think.

Re: X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014, Singer)

I like X-Men Origins: Wolverine too.

My biggest gripe with it however is that Sabretooth in that movie is nothing at all like Sabretooth from the first X-Men movie.

Sabretooth from the first X-Men movie was almost like a feral beast that could only grunt. I think he only had one normal line of dialogue in the whole movie when he said to Storm, "Scream for me." Every other line he had was just caveman grunts.

It's a big continuity plothole between those two vastly different Sabretooth characters.

Yeah that's true too I suppose. Also Emma Frost was like a teenager or something in X-Men Origins: Wolverine which by the time she's seen in the film should be after the events of X-Men: First Class where she's seen as a grown woman.

I'll still pretend X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Last Stand both never existed. But the reviews definitely sound good

At 86% on RT with 7 reviews in. A promising start, it seems the main issue with the movie is that if you haven't brushed up on your X-Men and don't already know the dozen or so main characters before you enter the theatre then the story and plotting may seem haphazard.

Yeah, that's a minor annoyance too. I don't think X-Men Origins Wolverine ever explicitly called the girl by name though, so it could just be another mutant with the diamond skin power. Although it was definitely intended to be Emma Frost, I don't recall her name ever actually being said in the movie. So that makes it easier to pretend it was some other random mutant with the same power.

That's how I justified it making sense to myself too. You're right though she is never mentioned by name.

Do the movies technically call Creed and Sabretooth the same character by name? I always thought they could have explained it easily by having Stryker inject Creed with something at the end that might make him more feral.

Re: X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014, Singer)

I'm willing to admit I may have called this one wrong.
The only thing right now keeping me from more optimistically geeking out is the scandal outside of it which leaves a sour taste.

And the real scandal, as far as I'm concerned, is how the powers that be in the media in general have managed to marginalize something so salacious and combustible it into an airy nothing that unless you were glued to TMZ you probably would have missed.

The movie though looks like it could be fun and the changes to the DoFP storyline will probably work.

I haven't seen the first X-Men movie in a long time, but I think they do call him Sabretooth in at least one scene.

The scene where Wolverine first meets Xavier, and Xavier tells him all their codenames such as Cyclops and Storm, and then Wolverine laughs and says, "What do they call you? Wheels?" I think Sabretooth was named in that scene as well.

I meant if they call Sabretooth by name as Creed or vice versa in either of the movies. Just any indication that they're the same character in the movies...

Aren't there a couple decades that pass between Origins and X-men? I just assumed Sabertooth living in the woods solo for a couple of decades would make the dude more feral.

I just re-watched the movie last week and I do recall Sabretooth being name-dropped...Just can't remember when. It might've been the scene you talked about.

For those who haven't seen that movie in a long time, give it a look because you might be in for a surprise because (For a genre that is always known for "Blowing shit up") there's only one explosion in the whole movie and it doesn't even happen in the final act! (Logan's trailer)

Two other continuity errors to be found in that movie:
Charles said Erik helped build cerebro---Well, maybe Erik helped out with the actual structure. Not the device. (Which Hank claimed in First Class) and Charles tells Logan he first met Erik when he was 17....Despite Charles already gaining a degree before actually meeting him. Maybe he got the degree at an advanced age? Sure, I'll buy it.

BTW, it was a little awkward looking at the BTS stuff in the wake of the recent sexual allegations
Spoiler:

Yeah, that's one reason I've always held the first film in higher regard than most people. The budget kind of forced them into trying to work more with character and themes and ideas...not just relying on the easy spectacle of blowing shit up.
As storytelling, it had most of the values I look for, and less of the things I try to avoid.

Wolverine's girlfriend does talk about her sister being named Emma at one point, but it's probably best to ignore most of that movie.

With Sabretooth I figured Origins would end with him getting a clawbotomy that left him in a feral state, but I assume they wanted the option to have the character return in his current state for possible sequels.

It still doesn't make sense that he'd be Wolverine's brother and not even recognize him in the first movie though. Which is why I just ignore everything except 1, 2, and FC .

I don't think there's been any court resolution, etc. to any of it yet as far as I know.

You mean why Sabretooth didn't recognize Wolverine? I don't recall anything that specifically said he didn't recognize Wolverine. He barely could communicate in anything but caveman grunts, so its difficult to say whether he truly recognized Wolverine or not.

Is that the standard that this lawsuit is going to held to? Doesn't seem to apply to other, more PC-friendly, scandals. There are plenty of ways to cover some of the issues these suits brought up- if they were at all interested.
For one thing, Collins-Rector got a hand slap on his criminal charges and was seemingly allowed to split the country and is living the high life somewhere in Europe while the kid that won a judgement against him got zip (or at least a fraction of the judgement awarded). Where is the shrill 24/7 drumbeat coverage to find this guy? Looks to me like the fix is in.
There is more vested monetary and political interest in soft peddling this, and keeping it in the shadows, than there is in exploiting it.

to get back on topic- has any film yet established who would win a fight between Wolverine and Captain Kirk?

Just read the Hollywood Reporter review. Okay, I'm sold. Definitely a Memorial Weekend flick for me.

I'm not holding it to any "standard" or calling anyone innocent or guilty, I just wondered if there had been any further legal word on the subject, was all.

They're were brothers in the Origins movie though, they'd had an intense relationship to say the least. If Sabertooth had any memories of Wolverine at all, you'd think that he'd have shown it, especially given the personal vendetta they had and what they'd been through together.
