Bryan Singer Hopes to ‘Fix’ Series With X-Men: Days of Future Past

bryan singer Bryan Singer has quite a challenge in front of him. Not only is he returning to the X-Men movie universe he helped to create, but he’s also dealing with a franchise that’s been damaged in the eyes of many by films like X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: The Last Strand. As he’s said plenty of time before, though, he’s not going to sweep anything under the rug, but instead use the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past to help clean up the mess.

When asked in a new interview with IGN.com whether the 2014 sequel would give him “the opportunity to revisit things that happened in the third film in terms of characters and endings that you might like to see changed,” Singer interpreted that as “fix shit,” explaining, “There’s going to be a little of that, a few things I can repair.”

He was tight-lipped about what those things might be, and about the potential return of James Marsden as Cyclops and Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, but he did shoot down rumors that Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage would be using motion-capture in his mysterious, and presumably villainous, role.

“He’s not going to be a CGI character,” he said. “He’ll be himself. Not that he’ll be playing Peter Dinklage, he’ll be playing this character. It’s not a shy character. He’s just such a phenomenal actor; I’m a huge fan of Peter’s and Game of Thrones. He was my first choice and I was really happy [about the casting]. It’s so funny to talk to him because he does that impeccable accent [on Game of Thrones] and then you talk to him and he’s this guy from New Jersey.”

Franchise was actually saved by the guy who did First Class. But speaking of franchises that need saving... Superman, woof.

I'm in the minority that thought Superman Returns was great and that Routh should've been kept in the role.

Re: X-Men: Days of Future Past - Dir: Singer

So Singer want's to "fix" the X-Men. Great. Why not a complete reboot? Every other fuck up (Hulk, Spidey, and allegedly the FF) get a mulligan, but we're stuck with the same screwed up mess that is X-Men. Are they afraid they can't reuse Jackman as Wolverine and Stewart as Xavier if they start over? Patching this mess up with a time travel story will only make it much, much worse.

Sounds like he could 'fix' things a la Star Trek reboot since he's dealing with time travel.

I hope he's not going to save the X franchise like he "saved" the Superman franchise

All they have to do is step in Last Stand before Jean goes nuts and alter the timeline.

I dont know how that would affect The Wolverine though since it takes place after Last Stand.

Shit color pallete. Horrible Lex for the modern world. Why doesn't Supes talk that much? Lois Lane was miscast. Superman's son. The list goes on. Long stretches of things happening that we don't really care about.

I've no problem w/ Routh. I think he could have done it. Sucks to see him go. Guy didn't get his chance. He did fine w/ the script given. Problem w/ it was that it didn't really do much for Superman.

Though it did have a few good Superman moments. Though they were too few for a film w/ Superman.

I had no problems with Routh, the rest was, however, shit.

I was bummed Routh was out when they decided to revamp. I'm sure the new guy will be fine, but I really did like the fact that Routh really worked to copy a lot of Reeve's mannerism's and reactions. I think if Spacey did the same thing with Lex Luthor, he may have been more palatable. I did hate the fact that they introduced Superman's son, because that can take the franchise in a whole new direction, and not a good one. I do find it amusing the color palette comes up as often as it does, I didn't have any real issue with it.

Re: X-Men: Days of Future Past - Dir: Singer

I'm glad Routh was replaced. I don't want a Reeve clone playing Superman again. Those movies are over and done with. So I'm glad we're getting a fresh new take. If you want to re-live the glory days, then watch the old movies on BD. I'm ready for something different and it looks like we'll get a really entertaining film.

Now...back to X-men. Singer said everything except "Ratner fucked this whole thing up". I wouldn't call Singer a savoir either. Not only from his poor take on Superman Returns, but the first X-men wasn't all that good to begin with. He pretty much nailed X2, so he's 1/2 on X-men movies. I enjoyed First Class despite some of its bumps and bruises, but am more excited for the sequel as I'm really interested in seeing Fassbender fully developed as Magento.

...watch it again. Look at the colors. Donner's Superman had life in there. Singer's was drabbed boring colors and whatnot. Boring. Depressing. Even the whole film's look in the frame was manipulated as well. People had muted colors in them.

Yeah, but I think Singer wants to redeem his modern-day X-Men series after it was Ratnered. Basically, de-Ratner it.

Plus...they didn't have much of a choice once Vaughn was out. They could go to somebody else sure but Singer started it, was there already doing stufff, he knows the world, and he was ready for it. In studio terms...good enough for it to keep going.

Re: X-Men: Days of Future Past - Dir: Singer

I thought X-Men First Class was the start of a new series? So Days of Future Past is going to have a character from the original X trilogy go back to the era of First Class and warn them about the Sentinels? And that will "fix" the endings in Last Stand?

Sounds pretty cool at first but after thinking about it, it sounds a lot like comic fans-turned-writers where they want to "fix" things they don't like with retcons, time travel, and deals with Mephistopheles. I originally thought it was cool how Singer was going to ignore Superman III and IV and do his own sequel to Richard Donner's Superman by keeping the first two films in continuity. Then I saw the result.

Does this mean I'm going to have to actually watch Last Stand to appreciate Days of Future Past?

Not the first time I've heard this. And yes, to ME, it reminds me of the original.

If I wanted to watch Superman (1978), I would have WATCHED Superman (1978). Who needed a long, drab, lifeless, stilted, warmed-over remake?

That's fine that it reminds you of the original, it's supposed to be a continuation of it. And I guess it is, which is neat but whatever. It tries to keep a lot of Donner's Superman there and it brings over what it can.

The facts are there though. For all it tried...it failed a lot doing so.

Re: X-Men: Days of Future Past - Dir: Singer

It's barely a continuation, it's more like a retread. Luthor has the same scheme as before, they even repeat some of the same dialog from the first movie. I'm surprised Singer and the hacks that wrote the script didn't bother trying to have him turn the Earth backward again and change history.
