Re: Scariest non R rated movie?

Drag Me To Hell was both scary and hilarious at the same time.

Night of the Living Dead would probably be PG-13 today.

Except for personally reshooting the entire ending.

I'm gonna come right out and say it: "Coraline" has my vote for the scariest movie ever. It's PG.

As an adult no movie scares me but between the creepy dolls and the parental replacement stuff I'm fairly certain "Coraline" would have terrified me as a child. Stop-motion animation is inherently disturbing too.

In a very similar vein is See No Evil (aka Blind Terror) from 1971, rated PG.

Exactly what I was going to write, but See No Evil is much scarier than Wait Until Dark, IMO.

Re: Scariest non R rated movie?

When I first saw See No Evil the first thing that came to mind was the R-rated one from a few years back starring Kane, which was pretty bad in my opinion. Guess I'll have to check out the other one.

I know it's not a scary movie, but Pee-wee's Big Adventure had a top notch scary moment.

Raiders of the Lost Ark.

A lot of stuff in that scared the shit out of me when I was five or six: the rotting corpses, the Ark opening up, melting faces, exploding Belloqs.

and the kid zombie stabbing her mother with a garden spade, might upset the MPAA as well

speaking of Spielberg, I actually had nightmare over Close Encounters - the abduction scene for me at age 7 freaked the hell out of me - gave me nightmares.

You can see a bunch of videos of kids reacting to the Large Marge animation on YouTube. It was a minor meme a year or so back. I watched it with my 4-year-old nephew last weekend and I was filming him and it didn't even phase him.

For what it's worth I used to call my mom into the room when that scene came on. I did the same thing during the library ghost scare in "Ghostbusters". That one doesn't bother my nephew either.

Bottom line: my nephew is a badass.

Re: Scariest non R rated movie?

Hmm, thought more titles would have been listed by now. I guess our memories have gotten fuzzy as we struggle to remember all the scary movies we saw as kids. I remember parts of some scary non-R movies but just can't remember the titles.

All dogs go to heaven: the ending with the mega demon dog is pretty scary. The movie's theme is about avoiding eternal damnation, pretty disturbing, esp. for a kids' movie.

Never seen or heard of it, but poster is nice.

Interestingly, Netflix shows an R rating, despite the poster and IMDB reflecting PG.
