Yea yea yea. Shelley Duvall. Don't know what I was thinking.

You were probably trying to think of a better actress than Shelley Duvall.

That's disappointing, but thanks for the heads up. I was really looking forward to this doc too.

Just so you know what it's like, the whole movie is basically composed of phone interviews with about 5 or so crackpot theorists, where they present and expound on their wacky theories. These are accompanied by visuals from the movie or other Kubrick films (and other films) to illustrate the point. Sometimes some animations or other visuals.

Some of the things they point out in the film to support their theories are interesting things I never noticed before, but aside from a few "Oh, that's cool" moments, it's really hard to put any stock into their theories, and their theories simply aren't that compelling.

The editors sometimes have fun at the theorists' expense. For example, the guy who talks about Kubrick helping NASA stage the filming of the Apollo moon landings, starts talking about how he's proven it, and so now "they" are watching him, and he expects his taxes to be audited, etc. And while he's saying these things, the editors are showing on-screen the scene from Eyes Wide Shut where Tom Cruise is walking on the street and is all paranoid and thinking he is being followed.

Thank you for the review. All these people already have wacky websites so the film seems unnecessary.

Anyone here look at Rob Ager's Kubrick analyses or hang around the Kubrick boards on the IMDB with folks like tieman64, hyperstillharry, and the gang? Interesting folks :p. It's amazing that Kubrick, who was always an advocate of film as a form of art, has maintained such a following after all of these years. The time and error he put into his films means they're still being discovered and reevaluated with new idea and we're still noticing new things about them today. I'm looking forward to this documentary, although there's no way in hell it'll hit theaters in my neck of the woods. I'll have to wait a whole for the DVD, I bet, and I'm damn sure Redbox won't be carrying this one.

It says IFC Films, I assume it was a production of theirs and they put up the money, though they may well have just picked up the distribution rights.

Re: ROOM 237 (2012) (dir. Rodney Ascher) (documentary about Kubrick's THE SHINING)

watched this yesterday and i liked it for the most part. honestly, i could listen to just about anyone talk about THE SHINING for hours and be entertained. there were pleanty of eye rolling moments (mostly involving the moon landing theory). what i did like most about the film was the pointing out of all the continuity "errors" (arguably intentional..this is kubrick we're talking about) and the mapping out of the hotel itself (some rooms/windows are literally impossible to exist). my favorite "theory" i suppose was that the film is a representaion of the slaughtering of the american indians. i did find it funny that a majority of the footage used from other films was from DEMONS. nice giallo/gobin-esque soundtrack as well. overall, it's worth a watch but don't expect your mind to be completely blown by it. 3.5/5

Well I absolutely loved this, it was such a fun ride listening to these wacko's talk about all their theories. I wasn't sold at first but once we got to the Dick Tray I just started laughing and went along for a delusional ride. I also enjoyed the guy who played the movie backwards and forwards at the same time, it just proves that you can read into anything.

“The movie never changes. It can’t change. But every time you see it, it’s different because you’re different. You see different things.”
Twelve Monkeys

Apparently Vitali, Kubrick's assistant, has said that most of what's in this documentary is nonsense, in his opinion. But hey, that's the beauty of art, it means different things to different people and looks different as time passes. I'm looking forward to seeing this if I ever get the chance soon, I'll probably wind up having to wait for the DVD though, can't imagine it'll hit much near me.

It's available for rental on iTunes, though peculiarly, not for purchase. In any case, I'll be renting from iTunes now, in spite of the fact that it's a fraking $6.99 rental.

Conscious author intent is just a small factor in critical interpretations. I enjoyed this, but some of it was obvious themes hidden within the material (white man's burden, native american stuff, labyrinth outside vs the hotel, etc.). The holocaust stuff and moon landing were the biggest stretches I thought.

Re: ROOM 237 (2012) (dir. Rodney Ascher) (documentary about Kubrick's THE SHINING)

I eventually found this to start boring the hell out of me. I haven't seen the film in a while, but the documentary really didn't connect with me, I found most of it very reaching. The stuff you mentioned was kind of obvious anyway, and the rest of it, particularly the moon landing stuff, frankly came across as total nonsense.

I'm waiting for someone to spoof this doc with another movie...like maybe a STAR WARS one called "TK421" :)

I watched it last night and, yeah, that's pretty much how I feel. Now that I know these crackpot theories are out there, I feel like it's going to ruin my desire to watch The Shining again, because I don't WANT to think about the BS in this movie... but I will.

The one interview where the guy's kid is making noise in the background... -ohbfrank-
Why didn't they just start over?
