This guy from HitFix saw it at Sundance and loved it:
"Anthology movies are incredibly difficult to pull off, and when you add "anthology film" to "found footage," a genre buzzword that is starting to wear out its welcome thanks to countless awful examples, it sounded to me like "V/H/S" was about as big a risk as anything playing here this week.
Hats off, then, to the entire team of filmmakers who collaborated on what I would honestly call one of the scariest movies I've seen in recent memory. And unlike many anthology films, "V/H/S" works as a cohesive piece, which is even more surprising because at the Q&A tonight, it was apparent that the filmmakers did not compare notes on their individual segments."

Sounds cool. I like that it doesn't appear to rely on jump scares. I hate jump scares and think it's a lazy way of going about scaring people.

Magnolia has picked up the film, which makes sense as they've distributed titles from David Bruckner (The Signal) and Ti West (House of the Devil).
Expect a theatrical release in the fall with VOD/DVD/Blu-ray shortly thereafter.

Magnolia is a great distributor with an eye for quality films. I get a lot of their titles on BD to review and almost all of them are worth a viewing.
I'm excited to see this one. I believe my boy Brad who runs Bloody Disgusting produced it. I've been hearing lots of great things.

Typically, yes. Cox dropped HDNet in my area, though, so no early preview for me.

Most of their films? Yes. However, there have been exceptions to the rule like The Host and The Signal which avoided the HDNET preview and VOD while-in-theaters route and went for a straightforward theatrical release and then DVD/Blu-ray/VOD release.

Sounds intriguing. I loved House of the Devil so Ti West's involvement is the hook for me here. As long as it's not more lame-ass torture porn crap or some weak "Paranormal Activity" knockoff, which are usually my first two negative reactions these days regarding any low-budget horror that generates internet buzz as "scariest thing I've seen in a long time."

I'm a sucker for anthologies, so I'm in. Sex Fiend has got me thinking, though, of writing a Paranormal Torture Porn movie. Could be the next big thing!

Just got back from a midnight screening at Seattle International Film Festival. Overall, I'm left with a thoroughly meh take on it. Some segments were really good, some were really bad.
It seems like many people are excited about Ti West being involved in this. His segment (aside from the wraparound portions) was definitely the weakest. He admitted in the Q&A afterwards that he was the first one to record his segment, so he didn't know the crazy stuff the other guys were going to do. He played it reserved, but it was also pretty dull.
Definitely feels too long at 2 hours. With the way it's set up, you can basically get 6 different groups of people saying "What the fuck is going on" at random points throughout the plots. Definitely results in fatigue. I would have excised West's to make a more flowing movie.

There has been some good and bad found footage movies, I don't love or hate them, and I think this looks really good. Has some good buzz, and even though I have seen more bad than good anthology movies, I have a soft spot for them. Will be checking this out for sure.
