But you weren't talking about 3D movies. You were talking about regular movies getting re-released.

Costed is a word, but it's not a word the way people on the internet use it.

True, but it was much faster to deny its legitimacy so I could get right into the chris_sc77 gag.

OK then I will clarify by stating I only approve of films being re-released theatrically if they are new versions of a film with additional footage. (Apacalypse Now Redux, Donnie Darko Director's Cut, etc.)
all others including the upcoming Phantom Menace 3d and Titanic 3D are nothing I could ever approve of.
If you dig that kinda think then go for it but I know I am not the only one who feels this way.

Re: Say Hi To Your Mother For Me: Weekend Box Office (1/13 - 1/16)

I'd actually rather watch classic movies on the big screen than most mainstream films being released these days. Being born in 1985, I've never had the opportunity to see films like 2001: A Space Odyssey or Lawrence of Arabia in a theater.

One of my fondest theater experiences was seeing Sword of Doom on the big screen during the samurai film festival at the Charles in Baltimore. I'd happily pay 3D prices for restored prints of classic films that I already know are good. Beats seeing yet another Transformers or Fast and Furious film...

Well technically, Phantom Menace and Titanic do have new features to them that they didn't have before. The 3D effect.

Re: Say Hi To Your Mother For Me: Weekend Box Office (1/13 - 1/16)

Here's the final totals for the four-day weekend:

To note:
  • Beauty and the Beast 3D became #1 on Monday with only an 18% drop from previous day whereas Contraband, which took the weekend, had one of the bigger drops in the top ten at 42%. Obviously, The Devil Inside had the biggest drop on Monday (55%).
  • Looking back, I think Disney could've pulled in a bigger audience if they released Beauty and the Beast 3D over Super Bowl weekend a la the Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus 3D concert film from years ago.
  • Despite Finke claiming there's no slump at the box office and this year's box office is better, there was no change this weekend from PY 2011.
  • Next weekend gives us an unnecessary 3D sequel (Underworld: Awakening) which will most likely take the top spot, another Relativity flop (Haywire), a film that probably should've been released this weekend (Red Tails) and the expansion of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. Sigh.

That sounds about right. Was there a wide restoration release or something?

Pretty much. I believe (and I could be wrong) that this was one of the first mass screenings of Kurosawa's 3+ hour cut in North America. All I know I was 12, my Dad took me, and it was one of the most amazing and transformative cinematic experiences of my life.

Re: Say Hi To Your Mother For Me: Weekend Box Office (1/13 - 1/16)

I was 29 when I first tried watching 7 samurai

I didn't last five minutes it was so boring

I keep trying to force myself to get through it

I'll watch a few minutes here and there on my tv in the bathroom when I'm having a tough bowel movement

6 years later and I still have another hour to go

unlike my bowel movements, I just can't seem to get through it

I couldn't imagine being 12 and sitting down in a theater to watch it

I saw the three-and-a-half-hour cut at a theater in Times Square in 1971. It later played on PBS, either later that year or the next, hosted by Charles Champlin, who was then, I believe, the film critic for the L.A. Times. About 8 or 9 years later, they re-released it to theaters and the ads claimed it was the first time the long cut was playing in theaters in the U.S. Which wasn't true.

Me too, though I was a few years older than you. I had watched some samurai TV with my parents (one was called Kamakura Era, I think), but nothing like this. I later saw Mag7, of course.

You'd probably be able to focus on it better in a theater, if the opportunity comes up.

.
I think you misunderstand his interests. The bowel movement was his primary objective.

If one of my parents had a cool name like that, I would be certain of it.

Why is there a Back to the Future reference in the thread title? Just wondering.
