Scarface Remake In the Works (D: Antoine Fuqua)
http://www.inquisitr.com/3415060/sca...ble-al-pacino/
I see the tagline now - "Ok! I'm Reloaded!"
Worst part of the article: "But rather than being a straight remake of the 1983 version, Scarface will instead be set in Los Angeles, rather than Miami, but still at its core will be a rag-to-riches story about an immigrant that is able to build up an empire through violence."
This is a terrible idea but once again shows how Hollywood is out of original ideas.

Honestly, a Mexican drug lord feels a lot more timely and "Politically Correct" than a Cuban refugee. That's a change I'd agree to if I were greenlighting a Scarface remake.

Terence Winter, the creator of Boardwalk Empire, will be doing a re-write. Story says he's polishing a draft from another writer.

re: Scarface - remake
Universal’s reimagining of the classic gangster pic “Scarface” looks to have hit small bump in the road, as sources tell Variety that director Antoine Fuqua has departed the project.
Insiders say Sony and Denzel Washington want a sequel to “The Equalizer” very quickly and need Fuqua back to being prepping the film, which caused conflicted with the “Scarface”schedule. Universal still wants the film up and running by the spring, and has already begun meeting with directors so production won’t be affected.
Sources have also told Variety that Diego Luna, star of “Rogue One”, is attached to star.
Sources say Fuqua very much wanted to do the film, and that he and his team were still trying to figure out a way to make it work even as Uni was meeting with other directors. But ultimately, Fuqua had already spent so much time developing the script for the next “Equalizer” that he simply couldn’t move on from a project he had so much invested in.
The film will be a Bluegrass Films and Global Produce production, and will be produced by Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber, and Dylan Clark. Marty Bregman, producer of the 1983 “Scarface” film, will also produce.
“Boardwalk Empire” creator Terence Winter penned the most recent draft.
The pic is a reimagining of the core immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films. The new film will be set in Los Angeles and will focus on a Mexican immigrant.
Exec VP of production Jon Mone and VP of production Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for Universal.
Fuqua is repped by CAA.

re: Scarface - remake
Joel and Ethan Coen have been tapped to polish the script for Universal Pictures’ “Scarface” reimagining.
The studio has also dated their new take on “Scarface” for August 10, 2018.
Variety first reported that Antoine Fuqua would be departing as director, but sources reveal that the studio is close to landing a new helmer. Diego Luna from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is attached to topline the film, according to sources.
Similarly, the brothers were also called on to polish Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken” and Steven Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies” to get the films ready to shoot.
A Bluegrass Films and Global Produce production, the drama will be produced by Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber, and Dylan Clark.
Martin Bregman, who produced the 1983 film, serves in the same capacity in the telling of this generation’s “Scarface,” which the studio first brought to the screen in 1932.

re: Scarface - remake
Hell or High Water filmmaker David MacKenzie and director Pete Berg are the front-runners to helm Universal’s remake of Scarface.
Antoine Fuqua was to have sat behind the camera but departed last week to focus on Sony’s sequel to 2014’s The Equalizer, which he also directed.
MacKenzie and Berg are meeting with Universal execs, setting up an interesting competition of sorts. Berg has a relationship with the studio having directed its releases Battleship and Lone Survivor. But interestingly, he acted as MacKenzie’s boss when in 2015 he hired the man to direct Commancheria, the movie that eventually became Hell or High Water.
Funnily, however, and in true Hollywood fashion, MacKenzie had trouble getting though many studio doors as early as last summer. In fact, MacKenzie tried to get the Scarface directing gig but was passed over, with the studio settling on the more experienced Fuqua in early August 2016.
High Water was released weeks later, becoming a breakout sleeper hit and earning Jeff Bridges an Oscar nomination. It also put MacKenzie on the Hollywood map, with the filmmaker fielding scripts from almost studio in town … and in full circle fashion, back in play for Scarface.
Scarface is the story of the rise and fall of a gangster, with previous versions made in 1932 and 1983. This one is a modern story set in Los Angeles and focuses on a Latino gangster.
No Country for Old Men and Fargo filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen did a recent polish on the script and Universal today dated the movie for a August 10, 2018 release.

That could be like Freddy meets Jason for Gangster movie fans.
Paramount and Universal would have to agree. Supposedly Michael Corleone died in 1997 so he would be alive during the reign of Tony Montana in the early 80's.

Ayer with good material (Fury, Harsh Times) is fine. Could see this project being an over the top disaster though. MacKenzie would make it more grounded.
