His next movie Mud also sounds interesting. I think the hard on would not exist if you take Michael Shannon out of the equation, so far he has been in all 3 of his films.

I don't think so, especially with Take Shelter. While Michael Shannon was excellent in the movie, he didn't make it by any stretch of the imagination. That movie was a case of a good actor being placed into an already strong movie.

I am not questioning how good his movies are, what I am saying is that more people will give his movies a view because of Shannon and thus noticing that he is a good director. When I picked up the dvd for Shotgun Stories, I did not know who Jeff Nichols was. I just saw Michael Shannon on the cover and decided to get it. Sometimes it takes a known actor to get a good director noticed.
