The former, Joe Stafford. He was played by the great Scoot McNairy.
Of course, this isn't the first time Ben Affleck and Scott have starred together:

Saw it last night and it was amazing. Lets save some time and hand Ben a stack of Oscars.

Really intense. My heartrate was up the whole time. I didn't know the specifics of the rescue.

Basically, none of the tense events in the movie (the confrontation in the bazaar, the plane ticket availability, and the chase down the runway) happened in real life. And as already said, the Canadians did far, far more (and the CIA did far, far less) than what was shown. Still, it was pretty damn entertaining!

I absolutely hated that. That and the "Hollywood" car chase ruined the experience for me. I subtracted 2 stars from its rating and won't vote for it for the SAG award based on those two scenes.

I listened to a really good interview with Ben Affleck on NPR. He was asked about embellishing the end of the movie and he justified it very well. He basically said that he felt he needed to do it because the real story, while harrowing in itself, wasn't exciting enough for the screen. He felt that he could add exciting elements without corrupting the essence of the story.
He also discussed the beginning and why he provided a backstory to the struggle and discussed some of the shortcomings of the film. It was a great interview. Definitely appreciated the movie more and Affleck as a director.

just saw this yesterday and really enjoyed the film up until the end which became too far fetched to be believable...took me right out of the movie.

While it's not a popcorn movie, it was entertaining in a popcorn sort of way.
Best Picture nomination? Naw, can't say I agree with it.

Saw it the other day and I'll agree, it was a good movie. And while none of the tense shit happened, it still was alright with it in there.

The part that bothered me is how all of the hostages were released after 440+ days of captivity. Granted, it's a tough thing to go through, but the 6 Americans would have most likely been held captive and released eventually. Some how this fact made me discredit the decision to extract the hostages in a such bold attempt.

But in the middle of the crisis how could they possible know what the ultimate outcome would be? All they knew was that they were in extreme danger remaining in the country.
