Re: Argo (Dir: Ben Affleck)
Regarding the above posts speculating on how the real event turned out,
I was totally unaware of this film until I saw the trailer this weekend before "Seeking A Friend...". It looks awesome and I'm really looking forward to it.
It's funny : in the early Aughts, everyone was commenting on how Matt Damon took the classy, smart projects and Ben Affleck went wherever the dollar signs were and how it was ruining his career. Now Matt's IMDB page is looking a little questionable and Ben has become a very proficient director. Good for him.
BTW : Here's a detailed 2007 Wired article on the rescue. Good stuff.

Played at Telluride. I don't know anything about this reviewer, but he loved it. The story sounds great, so I hope it's as good as he says.
"A gripping nail-biter, superbly suspenseful and yet occassionally light on its toes...
With references to "Star Wars," "Planet Of The Apes," Led Zeppelin, Van Halen and other 1970s pop cultural touchstones, while it might sound homage heavy, "Argo" tastefully (and organically) mixes in all elements of that era's millieu....
"Argo" is impressive and now feels like the actor-turned-director's time to earn serious plaudits. Extraordinarily suspenseful, extremely well-told and effortless in its complex tonal balance, the Telluride Film Festival couldn't have asked for a better opener; a captivating and thoughtful true-life drama that boasts a story so astonishing, it could only be told in the movies. [A-]"

Indiewire:
Whoever thought the Telluride Film Festival wasn't on the Oscar track this year didn't figure on Ben Affleck's third film as a director, "Argo" (October 12). The buzz was building on this taut and commercial thriller, which Affleck directs with screw-tightening efficiency that would make Michael Mann proud. Multiple Oscar nominations are in order as this movie surges to the top of the current Oscar contenders list.

Seeing pictures of the real guy during several time frames..but not in the year or era this film takes place in...he doesn't need a Latino for it.

Given recent events, the subject matter couldn't be more timely. Then again, it could result in release delays, or even a year of refiliming to change the setting from the middle east to North Korea.

I have to admit I'm surprised at all the positive word of mouth, as the trailers did not do much for me at all.
I think I would have preferred Affleck didn't star in it. I'll still try to see it.

Re: Argo (Dir: Ben Affleck)
I saw this last night. Some brief, spoiler free thoughts:
Affleck knocks it out of the park...again. The film does a great job balancing between the lighter tone of the Hollywood scenes with the more serious and tense Iran scenes. Great acting all around, and a convincing recreation of real life events. One of the best films I've seen in 2012.
I see this easily getting a best picture nod, and probably a couple nods for Affleck (writing and directing). It's more of a long shot, but I could see a Best Supporting Actor nomination happening for either Bryan Cranston or Alan Arkin as well.
Check it out. It's the bomb, yo.

That's exactly what I was hoping to hear, Groucho. I didn't see the trailer until recently and I thought it looked like it had all the trappings of a fantastic film.

I know this isn't a comic book thread but here's an article that explains Jack Kirby's connection to Argo. Pretty cool.
