Alien would never be Rated-R if it came out now, but it's cooler that it is anyway.

Re: Movies that got the wrong rating
I was a little surprised when watching The Social Network last night that an obvious "Fuck" by one of the Winklevii was dubbed over into a "Frick."
Would that really have put the movie over the edge to an R?? |

Yep. According to one of the commentaries, they also had to change the note a girl passed to Mark from "Fuck You" to "U Dick" because they were threatened with a "'fuck' is in the movie more than once!" R-rating by the MPAA.

Ugh, how stupid... like 13 year olds don't hear/say that everyday. What is wrong with this society?

Yeah and with all those thirteen year olds wanting to see a serious drama like The Social Network, the MPAA better protect them if their parents won't!

Well I can understand the want/need for a PG13 rating since they figure the younger crowd would be the demographic ($$$) for a movie about a website, but it's still ridiculous. |
Re: Movies that got the wrong rating
What also sucks is that they censored the F word in the Social Network commentaries and documentaries.

That is really silly since commentaries, etc. are usually listed as unrated material on dvds.
It's funny because I know that my Whatever It Takes DVD that Sony released years and years ago has deleted scenes that were removed specifically to get the film a PG-13. Christ, even The Fast and the Furious had an entire featurette on how they had to edit the film from an R to a PG-13 and you see the offending footage in question. Ugh. Pussies. |

alright..so I got bored and decided to look this up. From what I can find, seems like Speilberg was going to shoot it as realistic as he could. In doing so, he wasn't bothered to think about what it could get him in terms of a rating. He just shot it w/ his intentions in mind. If he got the NC-17, seems like he'd be fine w/ it. It was also mentioned that there was a possibility of going uncut for SPR.

Have you ever listened to the Jersey Girl commentaries? If you really want to listen to the limit of vulgarity one can push on a PG-13 DVD, those would be the commentaries to listen to.

Jumanji was so freaky and scary (monkeys throwing knives, killer insects, spiders), it should have gotten an R...it didn't even get a PG-13!
Some of those Austin Powers sequels were raunchy enough for an R as well. |

Re: Movies that got the wrong rating
I watched Dancer in the Dark last night, why was it R again? I think i've seen worse violence on regular TV.
|
Re: Movies that got the wrong rating
Just went to see 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' last night and my wife and I both laughed at the idea that it was R.
I read from others about the rating being off but it was WAY off! I've seen worse things in a PG film, and there was no sex or language either. Confusing. |
Re: Movies that got the wrong rating
The AV Club had an article about MPAA rating screw-ups, written last December, before the NC-17 rating for Blue Valentine was overturned on appeal:
http://www.avclub.com/articles/this-...us-mpaa,48587/ This previous thread on the MPAA rating system goes into a number of films with ratings people disagree with: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/movie-talk/...ng-system.html |
