Apes Rule Box Office Again: 8/12-8/14
Box Office Mojo Estimates:
Pretty good hold for Apes. Looks like the stink of "The Final Destination" kept some people from going to see more kids get mutilated. I wonder how much lower it would've been without the 3D premium.

I don't think $18 million is too bad an opening for FD5. According to BOM, that ranks it 3rd in the franchise. I've heard decent reviews for this installment, so I'd imagine the previous installment is hurting the new one some.

It's about on pace to finish where Thor finished, and Marvel considered that a success. Plus, CA is nearly at $300 million worldwide. Thor made considerably more worldwide, but it's also a pretty generic character without all the patriotic USA ties as opposed to Captain America.

I don't think so. It's already made it production budget back, and is still playing on a number of screens. As far as this summer's superhero movies go, only "Thor" has done better ($180M domestic/$450M worldwide).
"Green Lantern" is the one superhero movie that has to be considered an outright failure. "X-Men: First Class" might be considered a disappointment. But still, it doesn't seem that bad. Worldwide gross was $350M, and given that they completely turned over the cast you'd think expectations were lowered (at least compared to the previous X-Men movies).

I don't think any of the superhero movies did "Dark Knight" or even "Iron Man" levels, but none of the Marvel ones did outright terrible and will make a lot on DVD. I do they they glutted the market with four major tentpole pics this summer, you notice that the first of them, "Thor" made the most money. Be interesting to see how next summer with "Avengers," DK3, Spider-Man and whatever else opens will do.

Then again, Superman Returns cost more to make than it took in domestically, which is a big part of why it was viewed as a disappointment. Captain America has already surpassed its budget at the domestic box office and hasn't yet completed its box office run, so you're comparing apples to oranges.

that and all the money it took in to try to produce a superman film in the 90s up till SR was actually becoming a reality.

Nice hold for Apes. I hope that clearing $100m by Week 2 is positive enough for Fox to move forward on a sequel. With no real competition coming in until... I don't even know when, hopefully it can clear $150m at least.

Not sure why someone would consider Captain America a failure. Seems like it's box office take is about right. I'd say anything in the $150 million range for both Thor and Cap was going to make Marvel happy for the push towards the Avengers.
It's funny to see the same few people who defend Superman Returns continue to mention it all summer and refuse to admit the tepid audience reaction to that film.

Agree. Didn't most box-office analysts predicts a take of 130-150K max at the beginning of the summer? I know I saw something like that on box-office.com. The only film that made much much less than predicted was "The Green Lantern".

I never watch Glee (and don't even see many TV commercials, thanks to my DVR), but even I knew about the Glee movie at least a month ago. So I'm sure that people who might actually have wanted to see the movie also knew it was coming.

It's running about $6 million higher than G.I. Joe, which was released during the same period in 2009. That finished right at $150 mil, so I think Apes will likely hold better over time. Maybe it can get to $160 mil.
