Re: Take Shelter (2011): Michael Shannon, Dir: Jeff Nichols
So I've finally seen this film. Read so much but now...I finally saw it.
Goddamn. Shannon was so real. I was scared, he made me nervous, I felt so sad for him. It made me shiver out of fear for that character. This movie made me tense cuz I wanted him to be fine. No man deserves that kind of pain, at least not like he suffered.
Shannon was amazing, easily the best of last year. I loved everything about it. Chastain for sure has had way too much good fortune. And it's even more amazing that she lives up to the roles she gets. I don't want to see her fail. It's unbelievable what she has in the past 2 years.
I can't say I've any qualms w/ the film. It's A+. Just great...everything.

That scene in the cafeteria is brilliant.
Another performance that he rocked it in was RUNAWAYS. I expected to hate that film, because Stewart is in it, but Floria did a great job in directing it. Shannon shines in that.

Yeah. That cafeteria scene was amazing. What makes it even better is everyone's reaction to him. Their faces just look real. The uncomfort of seeing a guy act like that. Wonder if the other people their knew what he was going to do or not. Cuz it sure as hell looks like their reactions are real.

On a side note, anyone that is captivated by the brilliance of Michael Shannon needs to check out his work in William Friedkin's Bug. I'm sure many of you are familiar with the film, but for the uninitiated, ...it's a tour de force performance that is endlessly compelling and completely riveting. I can watch that movie over and over and continually discover new dimensions to his character and his stylistic choices as an actor.
I think he's the most unique contemporary actor I've seen in some time.

To add on...I totally forgot Shannon was in Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. Saw it 3 days ago and was shocked that he was in it. I didn't know who he was at the time.

Bug was fantastic (imho of course). Most people I know agree with you though.
I absolutely loved the Letts play and for me ...Friedkin captured the lurid, shattered and damaged intensity of his work.
But yeah, it's tough sledding and definitely not for everyone.

Yep, Bug was awesome, and he was shredded in that flick, too. Did recognize him when I saw the film recently. I remember Ebert saying that he should have gotten a nomination for Bug. I have the HD DVD import of that.

Finally got to see this film. It was good and powerful, but I can't say I actually enjoyed the experience of watching it.
The last 20 minutes was incredible, and I'm with the camp that
I'll need to see this a second time to have a better grasp of it.

on the subject of Michael Shannon, anyone remember him from the beginning of Jesus' Son? it had been a long-time favorite film of mine that i revisited recently and i was shocked to recognize him. i can't wait to see where his career is heading. Take Shelter was brilliant, and i even liked his small role in Mud. i'm sure he'll be outstanding in Midnight Special.

Disagree 100%. IMO I thought he was amazing in Take Shelter and even more amazing in Bug. I also love the film, Friedkin + Letts = One hell of a combination.

Letts has knocked 2 screenplays out of the park so far. He's quickly becoming a writer to look out for.

Saw this last night on Shudder.
My wife wanted to watch something "creepy" but she doesn't do slasher/gore.
Michael Shannon was great.
The group dinner scene/community meal thing was awesome and tough to watch.
The film as a whole did seem slow, but we also watched it late at night.
The ending got a response of
from my wife.
I think either
Anyway, he was great, the slow downward spiral he progressed upon was really intense.
