Sequel Torpedoes
One of the, if not the best sci-horror movies of all time was Alien and as hard as it is to create a sequel which parallels the original, the creators of Aliens met the challenge successfully and then had the chance to turn the helms over to a up-and-coming actor in the sci-fi arena with Michael Biehn(Terminator). The producers neglected and as a result, one of the greatest series, as well as the A caliber career of one of Hollywood's promising young actors was torpedoed(yes I'm saying their never was a good Alien after the 2nd and, besides a few average movies, namely, 'The Abyss' & 'The Art of War', to-date Biehn has not since been in a good movie).
Can you think of any other sequels that destroyed it's series? The 5th Friday the 13th is another that comes to mind. |

The Abyss Tombstone The Rock Planet Terror Also, Michael Biehn was hardly a "proven actor in the sci-fi arena." Are you citing The Terminator as proof? |
Re: Sequel Torpedoes
OP...It's Michael Biehn.
He was also excellent in William Friedkin's Rampage. Unfortunately his career never really took off due to his alcoholism. |
Re: Sequel Torpedoes
Thanks JumpCutz. Rampage, huh, never seen it. I'll have to pick it up, though Biehn wasn't in it.
MrSmearkase, 'Planet Terror', and 'Tombstone' were average, so was 'Navy Seals'. I forgot about these, I guess I should have checked(shrugs). 'The Rock' was overrated and below average in my opinion. But my point in the way of Biehn was that he had a chance to prove himself in a lead role and he was passed up, his career and I believe certainly the Alien series would have been better off if Weaver's character had been killed off instead of his. |

Not that the original was some superior piece of filmmaking, but it was a totally fun B-movie. The sequel wrecked everything good about the original. |

Re: Sequel Torpedoes
Jaws 2. According to the article Spielberg just did with AICN, he has some great ideas for a Jaws sequel that he's not sharing. He would have done the sequel himself but he didn't want to spend any more time on the water. Unfortunately one of the best movies of all time has 3 shitty sequels, each one shittier than the last.

Re: Sequel Torpedoes
First Blood was great and most probably won't agree with this but 2 & 3 sucked. 4 was better than both, but still no where near as good as the original.

Oh sorry, I looked up the Uwe Boll's Rampage(2009) by mistake, I'm off today, unfortunately it's my first day here.
They both look like they might be good. |

Damn. Thanks for tip... and the welcoming, I'm glad to be here.

Re: Sequel Torpedoes
I don't think movies were thought up as "franchises" back in the day. They kept making Rocky movies because people liked them. I don't think there were producers back in the 70's, 80's and even 90's that said we're going to make at least 3 films and probably more if this one film is successful. I think Hollywood is much more business-savvy nowadays. Disney saw POTC being successful so now they want as many POTC films as Depp agrees to work on.

Re: Sequel Torpedoes
Fistful of Dollars, For a Few More Dollars and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly are the first to come to mind, I think it was intentional and extremely successful. Though your right in that there were far less.

Re: Sequel Torpedoes
The Matrix Reloaded?
|
Re: Sequel Torpedoes
I agree, the first Matrix was the only good one, the other two felt a little sloppy.
|
Re: Sequel Torpedoes
Predator 2 is another, but that series never could/can measure up without Schwarzenegger. The same with Universal Soldier... at least not until Van Damme came back.
|
Re: Sequel Torpedoes
I thought the idea was to name a sequel that was so poorly received, they didn't make any more. Like:
Speed 2 Caddyshack 2 Arthur 2: On the Rocks But if the concept is movies that harmed the perception of the series as a whole, I think you'd have to throw in Star Wars: Episode I, right? (Technically it's not a sequel, but, eh.) |

Re: Sequel Torpedoes
... my bad.
Drex1, the concept is both... any sequel, irregardless of subsequent sequels, that you believed tanked, or could have tanked the entire series. The scope is broad, perhaps I should have used the wording in this post to describe it instead of periodic examples but when thinking of what next to post my mind wandered to my discontent with the Alien series and I just rolled with it and so again... my bad... I hope this helps clear up any confusion... you can consider this the auxiliary opener. |

What is this thread about?
1) Sequels that are better than the originals 2) Actors whose careers "torpedoed" after a single film and never had that momentum again 3) Michael Biehn's career 4) All of the above 5) None of the above |

One of, if not the best time for foreigners and science fiction horror film is hard, because it is a parallel to the original sequel, the creators of foreigners having a successful challenge, and then have the opportunity to open the Helms with Michael Biehn (Terminator) and a budding science fiction stage actor. Producers ignored, therefore, the greatest series, and the promising young actor in Hollywood is one of the professional caliber of destruction (yes, I said they had never good in the second and foreigners, except for a few, the average films, namely "the abyss" and "Art of War", the latest Biehn and not because of a good movie). You can think of any breach of its series of other complications? Fifth Black Friday is another thought. |

Re: Sequel Torpedoes
I just took it to mean sequels that more or less the ruined the franchise. When I responded with Jaws 2, I meant that movie was so much worse than the original and the following 2 sequels were even worse than the first sequel. It's possible that Jaws could have been a good franchise had the second movie been better.
However, another poster took it to mean than the sequel was so bad that no other sequels were made and therefore ended the franchise. Caddyshack II and Speed 2 for example. It's kind of an open ended up question that could be answered a number of ways. Beverly Hills Cop 3 was bad enough to not warrant any other further sequels. |

Hey, you don't like the fucking thread then don't post on it, what the fuck is wrong with you? What are you fucking five?
