The Big Lebowski and ... "The Dude Abides", what does it mean?

So recently I was looking for my The Big Lebowski dvd and I flat out cannot find it, its gone! Anyhow, I wanted to see it because I recently pre-ordered the blu-ray and I have not seen the movie in awhile so I forget, when the Dude says "The Dude abides." what is he talking about? For some reason this line crossed my mind while I was looking for the dvd this afternoon. thanks

(BTW a quick search on Amazon pulls up a bunch LINK)

Responding to the Stranger's comment "I know you will" in regards to the previous "Take 'er easy."

Beyond what gmanca said, throughout the film, the Dude repeats phrases/words he has heard others use. In this case, the rich Lebowski earlier said "I will not abide another toe".

Look, let me explain something to you. I'm not Mr. Lebowski. You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. That or His Dudeness... Duder... or El Duderino, if, you know, you're not into the whole brevity thing.

Think of it as the opposite of what you would do if you found a stranger in the Alps.

And stay away from my special...my fucking lady friend, man!

In all the times I've watched it with people (including the time I saw it in a movie theater a few weeks ago), I've never felt the callback where The Dude yells "Where's the fucking money, Lebowski?" gets enough laughs.

Honestly, I never got that until you just said it; it's such a common phrasing that you don't realize it's another reuse by the Dude.

So you have no frame of reference here, gmanca. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie and wants to know...
